This must make the residents feel much safer. It seems like a long time ago that we were experiencing those floods.

and the other good news M
is the 50% reduction in house prices....

so we Northerners can move from our tacky telephone boxes in Manchester down to a flood prone bungie in Somerset (parts of)

PP....?
erm the very last sentence of the article is:

// The flood work comes as a flooded house in Moorland was sold at auction for £175,000, compared with its original value of £300,000.//

which means basically everyone down there has lost half the value of their house ( their main asset )

I'm not sure that it means exactly that, based on one house sale by auction PP. But it can't have improved the general value of most of the homes affected that is for sure. Most of the people affected by the extreme flooding down there are still living in temp. accommodation, and will continue to do well into next year. I feel so sorry for them...whole lives ruined. I'm glad a live half-way up a 600 foot hill !
yeah it isnt good news,
which is in contrast to your head line -
Good news....

OK irony isnt done well on AB

whenever anyone asks ' whaaaaa ....?'
my heart sinks.
but then i think......
The proof of the pudding will be in the eating: we will have to wait and see what happens next winter.
I used to live over the hill (z) Bridport and I am pretty sure in days gone by, the levels didnt flood every winter.....

that is why I couldnt understand the suits saying in London we know dredging didnt work when in times gone by it obviously did.....
If you live on a flood plain or near water expect to get wet at some point and dont expect those that have to live in a place that is not so beautiful to sort you out.
I say withdraw from the levels and let the waters reclaim it again! flogging a dead horse if you ask me.
I used to live on the Somerset levels. The one thing I made sure of was that the house I bought was on high ground. The houses on the low levels were cheaper - for a reason.
