Accident
My son was on his way from Aberdeen to Glasgow for a conference when his train was stopped at Montrose. A teenage girl had been hit by the previous train at Carnoustie and that stretch of line is closed til noon. Son being bussed to Dundee to recommence his journey. Said he couldn't believe how many people were moaning because they might miss the Andy Murray match! So......a tennis match is more important than life? Thoughts with the young girl and her family (don't know how bad it is yet) and the poor train driver - he will no doubt have nightmares for some time to come.

We are bombarded with bad news every day, unlike the 'good old days' when news was restricted to a morning paper, tv news at 6pm and 10pm and radio news.
We have rolling news on tv, access to internet news 24/7 and even if you avoid news sites then Twitter and Facebook feeds quickly spread bad news.
If we allow ourselves to get upset about each and every tragedy we'd be emotional wrecks good for nothing so we immunise ourselves by making crass remarks or by the use of gallows humour.
Of course, there are some people who positively wallow in other peoples misfortunes and get distressed because their neighbour's great aunt in Australia housekeeper's mother has died peacefully in her bed aged 103.

If it was an accident I absolutely agree.
If she was a jumper my sympathy lies with the train driver and not a jot with the deceased. I have a friend who hit a jumper at 100mph. He was a broken man and never drove a train again. Couldn't even manage a shunter in the goods yard. Whatever your problems, jumping in front of a train is just about the worst way you can do yourself in. Absolutely selfish, no sympathy whatsoever.
Nonetheless, there are bound to be some victims whatever the cirumstances and the oiks wanting to get home to see the first round of the tennis should learn to gain some perspective. Different if t was the semi finals though :-)
