Your link of 21:25 makes for interesting reading DTC.
Unless I have misread the stats, 7-8 our every 10 Americans don't own a gun. The figures seem a little unsure, so maybe I should say 6-7 out of 10.
Anyway, nowhere near a majority, which coincides with my own 40 year experience of visiting the States and staying not in hotels but with ordinary people.
Anyway, all this is irrelevant as Palin seems not to be in the front line to win the next election in 2016, guns or no guns. Nor do the Republicans either.

Now there in lieth the debate, mikey - but say its 50:50, though I suspect it's more like the Scottish yeah/nay ratio, the majority of the 'grey mass' in the US 'tolerating' guns, then reform doesn't stand a chance - and remember your basic Senate limitations on reform of the Amendments, 2/3rds of the house having to to approve change. So, in short, no bloody way in the near future.
Angles can be found..... ;-) In short, Palin provides the foil to the right, as does Farage here, the immigration issue very similar and, for me, solvable if the politicans could come up with sensible rules, and that does not involve spending billions on concrete. Nope, offer jobs to locals for a period of x, x can vary of skill level needed, the base of the jobs then open to visas and limited entry rights for relatives until period y is over, medical cover etc limited to in relationship to the definition of the term y.
Uh… Mikey, my observation that Ms. Palin is "handy with a gun" had nothing whatsoever to do with her electability. I simply put that forth, coupled with her outdoor type of living and raising of her family, using her help in their fishing business, to demonstrate her self-reliability and accomplishments. She is an accomplished hunter and provides her family with wild game shot, cleaned and butchered by herself. That is admirable, in my view, especially in this day and age of looking to the government for being taken care of… cradle to grave.
She's far more than a pretty face, if one just spends the effort to hear her out.
While the "NRA" vote isn't to be taken lightly, I had no intention of using that singular facet of her personal life to pursue any point other than what I've stated.
I fully understand the difference in viewpoints between the U.S. and other countries when it comes to firearms. But… not a day goes by without news of another legally armed citizen protecting him/herself and family from deadly harm by use of their own self-reliance using a weapon. The last was an 80 year old Doctor who literally saved himself and others in his office from probable death at the hands of a man bent on stealing the drugs interested to the Doc. I've stated before, the 20 or so minutes between calling the police and their arriving is not the time to wish one had a weapon.
Additionally, all, every one of the terrible mass killings here in the U.S. were the work of deranged and troubled individuals who came by their weapons illegally. In the case of the Newtown murders, the killer killed his mother and stole her locked guns. Look… like it or not, the gun proliferation here makes it utter stupidity not to be able to defend oneself. It's a cliche' but fact is "outlaw guns and only the outlaws will have guns"...
Now, hoping I've cleared up the misunderstanding in my effort to defend Ms. Palin (as though she needs my help) how about explaining your condescending remarks about her children's names… Most here (in the U.S.) find them unique, and once you see the kids, you see how well their names fit them, especially in the State of Alaska. But at the very least your derision borders on the vituperative, and from what I've seen of your participation on this site, you're better than that...

Clanad...thanks for clearing up the confusion about Palin's ability with a gun. I can see now that it doesn't appear to qualify her in any way to be a politician, although it was as a potential politician that we were discussing her on this thread, not her ability to go hunting.
America and Britain will always have differing views on gun ownership I fear. When we had our last massacre, in Dunblane, the government of the time brought forward strict gun laws, that are universally popular. America, alas has yet to see its last gun massacre, but as your politicians cannot seem to do anything about the situation, it would seem that you as a nation will just have to live with the consequences.
As a side note, the massacres in Dunblane and Hungerford were committed by people that owned guns legally.
