The jamaican
// She acquired knowledge of herbal medicine in the Caribbean. When the Crimean War broke out, she applied to the War Office to assist but was refused. She travelled independently and set up her hotel and assisted battlefield wounded. She became extremely popular among service personnel who raised money for her when she faced destitution after the war. //

// Early 21st century commentators have asserted Nightingale's achievements in the Crimean War had been exaggerated by the media at the time, to satisfy the public's need for a hero, but her later achievements remain widely accepted. //
Seems both have merit.

Have you actually read 'Eminent Victorians' ?
Although she was troubled by certain religious thoughts in her early life, she finally overcame them to become the 'Angel of Mercy' we have all come to know.
Here is just one passage from it.
/// In the hospitals it was her duty to provide the services of herself and her nurses when they were asked for by the doctors, and not until then. At first some of the surgeons would have nothing to say to her, and, though she was welcomed by others, the majority were hostile and suspicious. But gradually she gained ground. Her good will could not be denied, and her capacity could not be disregarded. With consummate tact, with all the gentleness of supreme strength, she managed at last to impose her personality upon the susceptible, overwrought, discouraged, and helpless group of men in authority who surrounded her. She stood firm; she was a rock in the angry ocean; with her alone was safety, comfort, life. And so it was that hope dawned at Scutari. ///

We are frequently told lots of lies in regard to history throughout the ages, this is no exception. Why? Well people always have their own slant and own take on things, be it political, social, financial or intellectual. Some facts, hard and fast facts, can be presented in two almost polar ways by clever writers. It's one of the reasons history is so interesting, getting to the bottom of the 'truth' and sometimes unravelling deliberate mis truths in official documents too. I wouldn't worry about AOG Florence Nightingale is far better known than Mary Seacole by the majority of people but I do agree exam questions and school books have to be amended if they are factually incorrect.
History is a social construct rewritten by every generation, AOG
Earl Haig after winning the Great War spent around 70 y being called a blundering butcher before being rehabilitated - really the only way to win the war was to go over the top
I must say I am a revisionist on that one
Florence N invented the pie graph but also thought that "miasma" was causing the deaths in the troops. Infected air fromthe sewers in Scutari unfortunately it was contagion. Nightingale with her obsession with stats may have realised she was wrong just as she got v v famous and this MAY have caused her long illness ( or post traumatic stress disorder )
like I said history is rewritten every generation
