I thought pilots had to fulfil certain physical criteria i.e. 2 legs, 2 eyes and surely 2 ARMS!(of their own).

Douglas Bader had all sorts of trouble, mainly of convincing the Air Ministry to let him fly again. In 1940......Britain needed pilots. Also Bader was not responsible for .."passengers" .

He's harmless.

Joking aside, the real problem is; he was with a co-pilot whom he could not trust to land it.
Youngmafbog he was seconds from Landing. No time to transfer to Co-Pilot that would have been an even more dangerous manouvre.
It was his own, bought & paid for.
Fair enough, although that was not how I heard it reported.

Apparently it happened while he was carrying out the Flare manouvre which is where the nose is lifted just prior to landing
''All pilots have 2 legs of their own'' what about Douglas Bader
' The Legless Wonder' one of the best fighter pilots of WW2 but no legs?
Douglas Bader had no trouble.
Beat me to it EDDIE

^^ This pilot had an adapted plane as well, it had an attachment on the control column for hooking onto his arm .
The Guardian report left an amusing mental picture...

// Pilot's prosthetic limb detached as he attempted to land in Belfast in gusty conditions,  //
I'm with chill on this, ok all very PC having an amputee flying a plane, cold comfort when he stuffs it into the run way.
Political correctness always comes before the public's safety.

If he was trying to lift his nose with a prosthetic arm, I can see how it might have dropped off. He should have used the other one.
