With a record like this, why has it not been banned, well we know the reason don't we?

*** Since the carnival did not have local authority permission, initial police involvement was aimed at preventing it taking place at all, which resulted in regular confrontation and riots. ***
Wikipedia.

/// Scotland Yard staged a series of dawn raids on Tuesday linked to this weekend's Notting Hill carnival in west London. Weapons including two machine guns and a handgun, crack cocaine and about £70,000 in cash were seized, and 88 people were arrested. ///

/// Ch Supt Robyn Williams said: "We are committed to ensuring that Notting Hill carnival remains a safe, vibrant and enjoyable event. ///

Why wait until just before this Carnival, the police should be raiding these premises on a regular basis throughout the year?

jno and getting food poisoning for their trouble. Street food is openly sold without food hygiene inspectors being allowed to inspect the poor standards being used. Booze is sold on the streets at extortionate prices from ad hoc stalls. No excise licence needed at Carnival for these hawkers who are breaking the law. Police instructed to ignore use and sale...

carnival is worth about £90 million a year to London's economy. I can't think why they don't just ban it and invite the complainers to make up the difference out of their own pockets.

If you did'nt read my post at 1528 please do. I mention all the arrests that could of been made but were not detected (theft from person) plus all the unreported crime that could of led to further arrests. Excess of 1000 arrests. We would'nt see those crime figures at Henley regatta I suggest.

/// on that basis, London should be banned. ///

I hope that was in jest, because it was just plain silly.

/// However, the arrest rate last year was 0.03%, less than at football matches, say the Met. ///

There are some who the police have to been show as being tolerant and friendly towards.

Look out for the yearly photo of a black lady wearing a policeman's hat.

At what cost to others, you really think it is acceptable to put up with murders, looting, damage to property, and the cost of police resources etc, etc, etc for a mere £90m?

Well I don't.

That is a lot of money to boost the London economy. Can you tell me where you got that information from and who compiled those figures. I don't suppose you can tell me how much it costs to stage the event. I suppose that would be quite fluid each year would'nt it. You just can't predict how many will be murdered, how many ambulance call outs at £221 a time, How many business have to close down during the event and profits lost, diversions and extra TfL staff on duty as well as police and hospital staff.
the cost of policing is £3 million, so the carnival is well in credit.

You are assuming that the murders etc wouldn't happen if it wasn't on. Seems to me it's not a bad idea to keep all London's criminals together in one place and keep an eye on them.
the figures came from Time Out, retrocop. In terms of "staging" the event, remember most of the participants are unpaid.
cost of policing the event here - although you'll need to take into account a few years' inflation:-

That always springs to mind every carnival. A dusky maiden wearing a police helmet whilst two officers with stupid grins on their faces smile at the cameras whilst doing the Samba down Ladbroke Grove. The obligatory PR exercise to show how ethnic friendly we are in the service.Whatever happened to a dignified police service and what's more the discipline offence of "behaviour likely to bring disrepute on the service"?

I think I am quite right in assuming that these murders would not of occurred if the NHC was'nt on!!

Not if you take into account all the other incidentals.

/// Seems to me it's not a bad idea to keep all London's criminals together in one place and keep an eye on them. ///

Well why not just rename it and call it 'The London Criminal's Carnival'?

Prizes for all those who can 'get away with murder'.
do you really think all the million-plus people who attend it are criminals?

/// do you really think all the million-plus people who attend it are criminals ///

No a great deal are victims.
On reflection, i think the best advice i can give aog is to stay away this year.

no doubt a few hours in the allotment will suit you better

Yes, I'd get down to your allotment to keep an eye on your tools if I were you.

"not a bad idea to keep all London's criminals together in one place and keep an eye on them."

What makes you think they will all be visiting the carnival with around a third of London's finest on duty there? No, much better they head off to the suburbs to do a bit of burglary, shoplifting and mugging whilst the local plod are engaged in W.10 earning a nice bit of O/T and dancing down Ladbroke Grove with black ladies.
Ban the carnival because a tiny minority use it as a crime base ?

Well, what about banning the House of Commons on the same basis (it certainly costs more than the Carnival) ?
The NHC is a great day out.

The police do a fantastic job in ensuring the safety of the huge numbers over the weekend.

If you have an event which attracts one million people (just think of that number for a moment...a million), then it's likely that you will get some trouble-makers, gangs, and worse.

Instead of banning it, we should be applauding the police in their efforts in ensuring people enjoy the weekend.

I know that for some, the NHC only appears on their radar when trouble erupts, but for the vast majority (those who actually attend, and therefore have a better idea of what the NHC is actually like), it's simply a pleasant day out with music, food and drink.

Oh, and let's pencil in October 22nd.

That's the date of the MOBO Awards this year. Can't wait for the inevitable posts on it...
aog does seem to have got his thread in a few days early this year. Are you going to be busy with your mas troupe for the rest of the week, aog?

Not know of any murders taking place in the House of Commons, in recent years.

I find it absolutely amazing that some are willing to accept a few possible stabbings etc, just as long as it doesn't interfere with mass mobs of drunken and drugged up individuals enjoying themselves.

Strange when they can't wait to criticise and condemn a peaceful march by such organisations as the EDL.etc. after all the members of these parties have the opportunity to have a drink and a bit of enjoyment, winding the Far-Left up, although unlike some they do draw a line at murder and rioting.
