Nice to see that the carnival everybody loves went off quite peacefully.

Just three men were stabbed, two police officers injured, 261 arrests, several men injured, one sustaining a serious stab wound and eight others also received knife wounds, six men arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and a female police officer attacked.

The Metropolitan Police also issued Section 60 and Section 60AA Orders, giving police the power to stop and search across the two-day Carnival late last night in response to the stabbings, but strangely enough they were only put in place from 7pm on Monday until 2am Tuesday, why weren't they in place before, during and after the carnival?

Nice though to see a change from the obligatory black lady wears policeman's helmet photo.

I suppose he's wondering, like many people, why such an event was ever allowed to gain hold and increase its level of disruption in such an unsuitable area. He may also be wondering why one with such levels of arrests for offences involving violence - many of them serious - is still countenanced. Still, it could have been worse; at least he lashed down with rain...

Sorry, sp, I forgot to answer your question from yesterday.

The only concession I would make is to allow the monarch's Coronation, the annual State opening of Parliament, the annual Remembrance Day ceremonies held across the country and State funerals. I would not countenance the Lord Mayor's show (unless, perhaps, if it was held at 2am), certainly not State visits and certainly no running or cycling races (those wishing to run 26 miles can complete 100 or so laps of one of the many athletics tracks around the country, those wishing to ride a bike for 100 miles or so can do so on one of the purpose built tracks). Definitely no street parties.

I simply cannot understand this fascination for having to organise, take part in or view activities that take place in the street. The UK has abundant examples of locations where such activities can take place with minimal disruption. Even then those events should be discouraged as large numbers of people swarming to a single place can cause severe problems. If pushed I would suggest a limit of around 5,000 people in any one gathering is the maximum that should be allowed.
Thanks for the clarification NJ.

Takes all sorts!

I think most "British" traditions have been imported, and many from the USA. And we are, after all, mostly descendants from other climes. Apparently if ALL your great-great grandparents are English you are in fact descended from William the Conquerer. C'est la vie. Does anyone have any figures for reported stabbings on an average 24 hours in Notting Hill? Or at any football match?

/// So despite you lambasting me for suggesting the reason you were so anti the NHC was due to colour or race - you yourself have just confirmed it is!! ///

What just because the majority of the population in the West Indies and Pakistan happen to have a darker skin than Europeans, you seem obsessed by the colour of a person's skin.

For you information we are talking about cultures and traditions here.
AOG

Agreed...and as this is nothing to do with race, would you also agree that the British tradition of summer barbecues is not British at all either?

I'm just trying to establish why you seem to think that something (the NHC) isn't a British tradition, despite the fact that there are now people of retirement age who cannot remember a time before the Carnival.

How long does something have to be done in Britain before it is considered a British tradition?

What about the traditional post-pub curry?

Another person who decided to go along to the Notting Hill

Regardless of whether or not this happens to now be an "English tradition" (yes English, since it takes placer in our capital).

I repeat it should now be banned forthwith.
AOG

Just to clarify something...are you going to respond to my questions? If not, not problem. Totally understand and it's not my business to badger you.

But let me know whether you are interested in this debate. If you aren't, I'm more than happy to ignore this thread.
sp1814, i dont suppose you bumped into hugh grant or julia roberts, go on say of course i did.

The Mail report said;

/// The young woman said the man did not stop touching her despite her telling him to at the Caribbean festival in west London on Monday. ///

And this was the response from a reader;

/// HOW DARE YOU STATE CARIBBEAN CARNIVAL TO TRY TO IMPLY IT WAS A BLACK MAN THAT ASSAULTED THIS POOR GIRL!!!!!!!! YOU DISGUST ME! There were more drunk white men than ever this year and its more than likely one of them that attacked!! DM YOU MAKE ME SICK! ///

Talk about a chip on the shoulder, seems to me that yet another word need adding to the 'NO, NO word Dictionary' that being CARIBBEAN, oh dear where will it all end?

Incidentally the Mail didn't even say "Carnival" they actually said "Festival".

piggy nose

What? At the Kate Bush gig?

Confused!!!

Isn't it obvious that I am interested in this debate, but I can't answer your every question especially when they have no bearing on the actual problems of the Notting Hill Carnival.

But to try and pacify you, yes I suppose you can say that Curry eating along with drinking also summer barbecues have in some quarters become a British tradition, but I am not aware that the same level of violence or police presence has ever been attached to either of those pastimes.
AOG

I see you've decided to branch off into a discussion with yourself answering a question that (I assume) only you can hear.

Enjoy.

I don't want to interrupt your thread...

Not sure anyone else is required to be honest.
Ignore the violence for a moment.

The Notting Hill Carnival is a British tradition...I think you were questioning whether it was, and I am saying it is.

Do we agree on that?
I think the point is - I have not seen any argument put forward that persuades me that the NHC should be cancelled/banned.

I've seen plenty of arguments to suggest that the police have done an excellent job arresting the right people...
sp 1814, i take it you didnt see that cheesy film " notting hill " then

/// The Notting Hill Carnival is a British tradition...I think you were questioning whether it was, and I am saying it is. ///

Carnivals yes, but not this particular one, that is more of a tradition in the Caribbean or Rio, neither is the Chinese new year London parade, which also attracts the crowds but strangely enough not the violence or deaths.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-26008320

So sorry NO!!! we can't Ignore the violence as you suggest.

Incidentally why do you keep harping on about it being a 'British' tradition, doesn't it take place in Notting Hill and isn't that in London and isn't that the Capital city of 'England'?

Then tell me how many more acts of aggression, murders, stabbings, property damage etc, that you yourself is prepared to accept, before even you say enough enough?

Please look at the photo of that young woman's facial injuries before you answer.

And what pray does that happen to be?

Not brought back anything from the carnival have you?

Please be more explicit.
ANOTHEOLDGIT, how many crimes are there on an average two or three days in an area with a population similar to the number of folk at the Carnival?
ANOTHEOLDGIT would you say that football is an English tradition? What about the violence that happened EVERY weekend in and around numerous grounds during the football season? Were you calling for that to be banned at the height of hooligan problems?
