With Rotherham and Yewtree still in the headlines, are American Apparel simply just trying to garner a bit of free publicity?

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/advertising/american-apparel-ads-banned-by-watchdog-for-sexualising-schoolgirls-9706904.html

This is obviously gratuitous - or it it? That's just my opinion.

Is there anyone who thinks that this advert is harmless?

Okay...it doesn't work on an iPad.
Oh dear, oh dear, soon there will be a cry for all St Trinian's films to be banned, in case they encourage paedophilia.

Had this been reported in the Daily Mail I am sure there would have been many criticisms regarding their over sensationalism.

*** A “pornographic” advert by clothing brand American Apparel, ***

*** Complainants said the “school days” images, featuring young women posing in different school settings, amounted to “underage porn”. ***

Interesting to note however;

*** The brand said one of the models was 30 years old. ***

Thank you for the reference to the Daily Mail.

I've looked at their reporting of the story, and the top rated comment.

Think I'll stick with The Independent on this one.
the number of suspender belts at St Trinian's always did make me wonder who exactly the films were aimed at. But the wearers all looked to be in their 40s, so it hardly mattered. AA uses models who look as young as possible.

No need to go looking for trouble for the Daily Mail where none exists - that looks like a persecution complex.

The Saint Trinian's films were very much of their time - and the remakes failed to recapture the spirit of that time.

Just making a comment Andy, sorry if it was a valid one, which caused you to take the trouble to copy and paste all of my post.

Perhaps it is because of the times we now live in, I can't remember those films back then, being accused of encouraging paedophilia.

I think you have to take these things in context. St Trinians was a tongue in cheek comedy film aimed at adults -think it had an 'A rating at the time -not an advert aimed at young females. Apart from the fact its vulgar and unnecessary it gives the totally wrong message to young female girls, and boys for that matter -see a girl showing her knickers -take a photo and put it on the Net!

I have read the Daily Mail report thanks to jno's link,

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2741439/Sexist-school-girl-advertising-campaign-American-Apparel-banned-watchdog-say-images-gratuitous.html

Can not see any mention of:

a “pornographic” advert, neither a mention of “underage porn”.

So perhaps you are wrong to stick to the Independent, because it seems that they are presenting you with misleading information, all in the name of 'sensationalism' a matter that you are forever accusing the Daily Mail of doing.
What did I say about a persecution complex?

In fairness, I've never accused the Daily Mail of sensationalism.

Only that it prints lies and half truths to suit it's predefined societal agenda.

Agendas?

No...agenda.

Agenda is the plural right?

So what's the singular or 'agenda'.

Time for Dr Google.
Question Author
"Originally agenda was the plural of agendum, meaning ‘a thing to be done’. However, it became applied to a list of things to be done, and in this, the most usual modern sense, it has become firmly singular, with the plural agendas."

Now I never knew that!

Sorry...went off track there.
The fact that the company itself says //consumers had to “opt in” to see the images.// suggests there might be something dodgy about it.

I don't like it, myself, and I wouldn't want any daughter of mine - I don't have one - buying from them. I have bought from them before and thought the pictures on their website provocative, while the clothes are quite plain, really.
for goodness sake andy , sp and AOL -put your willies away ;-)

Weird coincidence...my boss has just told me to do the same thing...but that might be because we have clients visiting the office.

It's political correctness gone mad!

/// What did I say about a persecution complex? ///

Is it also a 'persecution complex' that you possess, when you, yourself defend certain opinions?
Ew, I don't like this :-(

Most definitely agree with the banning of the ad.
