A union flag with the saltire component very lightly embossed so that with use it wears away leaving the cross of St. George.
Should we wait until after the referendum before committing ourselves? Off the top of my head I'd pick a Robin (wasn't it a wren on a farthing?)

He would most likely have thought that there had been another war, one which this time we had lost, and so England had consequently been invaded.

AOG, it was just the cigar link which Hamlet's of course were all about happiness from awkward and embarrassing situations ;-)
My first thought was the Union flag, or a map of the UK (similar to what they have/used to have on the euro).
