Protests have escalated in Hong Kong, as police have used tear gas and pepper spray.

These protests are being reported as pro-democracy, and appear to be characterising themselves as such on social media.

I hope so, but I doubt it.
No, the lefties will ensure it will not.
I don't think it is about lefties. No country wants bits to split off as independent. If the government is more totalitarian in nature then there is even less likelihood of giving it consideration.

Trying to blend a far right area with a far left one was always going to be troublesome. I'm no historian but I don't see why any historic agreement was reached when such a high risk situation would come into being. Sounds like some folk at the time just so happened to think it seemed a good idea ?
Usual Western media biased reporting only gives the 'pro-Democracy' vested interest end and not the fact it is predominantly an #Occupy anti-neoliberal economics policy protest:
