I caught a glimpse of this on the TV last week but switched over because I found it so offensive. Leaving aside the obvious free-loading aspect of this, does anybody know what Mr Rolfe is going to do when he loses his looks ?

His stupidity has no effect on him - he wants no responsibility and has none. The people paying for him and his brood have every right to know what their money is being spent on - and they have every right to be angry when they discover it being squandered on people like him. I see 'superior self-righteousness' coming from only one direction here, and yes, the system is at fault, so perhaps it's time for a change. How about those who have no objection to keeping the dregs of society pay extra in taxes to cover the expense?

Here here Naomi !
The Welfare State was only ever meant to be a safety net, not a hammock. If he choses to have 26 kids let him and his "partners" provide for them. If they are unable to provide for them and the children suffer, take them into care and foster them out to families who do care about children.
mikey444 - "Really Andy...what an outburst !"

Not at all - I don't do 'outbursts.

"Am I being superior and self-righteousness compared to this loafer ?"

Of course you are - that's the whole idea of programmes like this!

"The more publicity that people like get, the more chance we have of changing our welfare system so that there will less like him in the future."

That is patently ludicrous. Just how many changes to the welfare system do you honestly think will occur because TV channels regularly wheel out some wheedling n'er do well to inflame the masses and pay advertising revenue. These programmes are not some kind of public service - they are designed to whip up argument and anger, and stoke viewing figurres.

To ascribe some sort of social concience to the TV companies who make this lowest-cmoonon-denominator pap, or the media who flag it in advance, and let their columnists go over it again afterwards, is not worthy of a gentleman as worldy as I know you to be.

"The TV company can answer for themselves but they didn't invent this bloke, or the others in the same position."

No they didn't invent him, but they are doing no good at all encouraging the nation to point and fume.

the Welfare System does need changing, no argument there, but bread and circuses is never going to work.

"Shooting the messenger rarely works Andy."

Absolutely - but failing to give them the reaction they need would be a step in the right direction, if their messsage is mealy-mouthed moralising.

Graham-W. What a good idea. If we had done that with the Philpott's kids, they would still be alive today.

But nobody has answered my question above...what has this chap got ? It can't be good looks...and no smutty replies please !

I think we are going to have to agree to disagree here Andy. Most people on here seem to have the same opinion, and I am sure they don't see themselves as "mealy-mouthed" ...just shocked and appalled.
andy-hughes, But their message isn't mealy-mouthed moralising. It's telling it like it is. At the expense of the rest of society this man is working the system - and getting away with it. It needs to be said.
mikey444 - "what has this chap got ? It can't be good looks...and no smutty replies please !"

He has got the situation he is in.

He is out of work, bored, irresponsibile, probably not very bright.

Add in several women with the same set-up, and you have casual relationsips formed from nothing more than bordeom and something to do.

People like this are not looking for relationships, or affection, or even mutual attraction - it's doubtful if they understand what any of those concepts mean.

They do what they do because there is nothijng else for them to do - and that is a sad indictment on our society.

@1513 Mikey ?

They could try getting a job Andy, like the rest of us...that might take up a few hours of their day !
Peter Rolfe ( and other extreme cases) are wheeled out in the media on a regular basis,he (and others) are ideal fodder for these programmes/articles.

Of course something needs to change but I am certainly not clever enough to know what, and many who are paid huge amounts haven't solved it yet either.
mikey - "At the expense of the rest of society this man is working the system - and getting away with it. It needs to be said."

Why does it need to be said? Anyone who lives in our society knows that this goes on.

i did not watch the programme, but I will perfectly willing to bet that it was not be appraoched from a social history perspective - rather from a titilation and 'how shocking!' point of view - my view is underlined by your switching over from it - surely not because the socail history aspect was boring, but because you were getting one of your 'heads' with genuinely aggrieved feelings.

These programmes serve no-one but the advertisers. They help no-one, they offer no solutions, no viewpoint about what can be done to break the cycle of this behaviour.

No, they simply pump up the populace with anger - it's nasty and it's wrong.

I did see your contribution Baldric, but it still doesn't explain why some many women should have surrendered their maidenhoods to such a deeply unattractive character.

We cross-posted, but seem to agree on the sheer futility of this modern version of peering through the bars at Bedlam.
Mikey - not quite sure how his looks are relevant?

///surrendered their maidenhoods///

Really, you sure about that?!!
Apologies naomi - I inadvertently attributed your post to Mikey.

We can agree to disagree on the thrust and structure of the programme - I am unable to comment in detail because I didn't see it, but this kind of pap is trotted out on a regular basis by TV companies because it is cheap to make, it has a bottomless pit of subject matter, and if they are lucky, they can parlay one of these individsuals into a 'celebrity' like the woman who went onto Celebrity Big Brother.

It really does beggar belief doesn't it.
I think it a question of faith that he breeds to get more money and would not continue to breed otherwise. You may be right but I'd prefer something more persuasive to keep him, and other like him, from such irresponsible behaviour. I think that simply taking the kids away to bring up for them may not have the desired affect. And in any case there would be howls of protest at a kid being torn away from the family which, it would be said, is much better than them being in care.
// Just how many changes to the welfare system do you honestly think will occur because TV channels regularly wheel out some wheedling n'er do well to inflame the masses and pay advertising revenue. //

Plenty. Public opinion is the one of the main reasons the last few governments have made changes to the welfare system. That and the need to save money of course.
