For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.The purpose of the contributions to the EU is to help governments in office to pay less contributions when there is a poor economy within there country as was when the conservative were when last in office and John Major set up this system for countries with a good economy to pay more and less for those with a poor economy which worked well for us then - however things have changed in our economy and David Cameron can argue to the EU on the grounds that a percentage should only account for a quarter of our economic success and not the full amount as they have in mind -
He can refuse to pay, as has been said. The Eurocrats have said that they will then fine the UK. They keep fining France for various things and France pays if the fines are less than the cost of compliance, otherwise I'm told that they don't pay the fines either!
I don't think they'd throw us out until it had dragged on a long, long time, but they just might make an example of us. You'r right, it would certainly save the cost of a Referendum!
