Is there more to be concerned about this, than just the matter of whether Miliband put money in this woman's collection cup or not?

In this day of heightened terrorist security, should the way have been cleared of such persons before the passage of the leader of the opposition?

This was always going to be a lose-lose situation for Mr Milliband.

If he walks past and ignores the lady, he will be seen as heartless.

If he gives her twenty pounds he will be seen as profligate.

If he gives her a lecture about getting a job he will be seen as sneering at someone less fortunate.

The answer for future reference, is to have an aid ready with some money in an envelope, so the paps can’t see it, and let them hand over the money. That was Mr Milliband is distanced – and even then he will not win, but it has to be in improvement on giving 2p and not looking the woman in the face!
AOG - " ... In this day of heightened terrorist security, should the way have been cleared of such persons before the passage of the leader of the opposition?"

'Such persons' as you choose to put it probably pose less of a threat than any stranger a politician walks past in the street.

Does the fact that she is of Asian extraction raise your alarm, or would it be any 'such person' who is homeless and happens to be on the route Mr Milliband is walking.

I have no doubt he passes homeless people every day, but the fact that this was a woman, and apparently of Asian extraction made it a photo opportunity.

If politicians are going to avoid walking the streets and interacting with people who potentially vote for them, then they might as well drive around in bullet-proof cars and avoid the potential threat altogether.

That has to be a better solution that sweeping the streets in advance so that perceived ‘undesirables’ can be moved on, lest they pollute the area Mr Milliband is about to occupy as he walks past.
idiot, should have given her his bacon sandwich.

/// Last night a homeless man even claimed the beggar was not homeless but part of a gang of Romanian women who make up to £50 a day. ///

It would seem that some think that Romania is in Asia, rather than the fact that it is in Europe.
// /// Last night a homeless man even claimed the beggar was not homeless but part of a gang of Romanian women who make up to £50 a day.//

I thought she was Romanian. Having had my pocket picked in Tirgu Giu ( that is in Romania and NOT asia and is the birth place of Brancusi nno less ) I have a rather jaundiced view of the land and people
He has probably got a pocketful of 2p's to remind him of the motto and his dreams at the General Election...

'ICH DIEN' !! ('I serve')
Andy has it right here. If Ed had been photographed walking past the beggar, than AOG would be the first to kick up a fuss, especially as Ed is shadowed by a DM photographer everywhere he goes. He was damned if he did and damned if he didn't.

Discuss and debate Labours policies AOG, rather than leaping on every little band wagon that the DM rolls out ! Its policies that count, not celebrity gossip.
What a waste of a tree in printing this rubbish.
oh dear, you're upsetting 'everyone' again, aog. ;)
They missed the really embarrassing bit when he insisted on some change.
As usual I take a somewhat different view.

"The answer for future reference" is to clear beggars off the streets. This should apply regardless of their nationality and regardless of who may be passing by.
Mountain out of a molehill, not that I care 2 figs about Ed but:
Maybe he only had 2p on him, I rarely carry cash
Maybe she was part of a gang
Maybe she wasn't homeless
No-one is forced to be charitable and it shouldn't be a marker for character
Gonit...do you have any particular time frame in mind as to how long you are going to continue to use that dreadful fright-mask avatar ? It gives me the willys every time I walk past my PC. Its my fault I suppose, having such a big monitor ! Even my Yorkie is growling at it, although I have trained him well over the years.
I think Gromit may just be trying to wind up TTT.
Well I quite like old TTT, and anyway, its 'orrible !
Being round that area a lot I'd be tempted to agree with what Peter has said, the former bit, I have been to Tirgu Giu but didn't get my pocket picked.
The worst of it is he'll be claiming it back on expenses.
Isn't begging illegal in the UK, if not it should be, and if she is a Romanian migrant with a gang, she shouldn't be allowed to stay here, and deported!
AOG - "It would seem that some think that Romania is in Asia, rather than the fact that it is in Europe."

I typed my response after a brief glimpse of the photo, I did not read all the link - so my assumption that the lady was Asian is a reasonable one.

If you get pleasure from nit picking my geography skills, go ahead, but you will need to be extremely careful that you do not make a simple error - your detractors on here will not be forgiving.
^ Asia - don't worry about the error, it's a minor issue ;-)
