Can't the French do ANYTHING for themselves? Why do they feel we have to get embroiled in this?
It's their problem, it's up to them to sort it out, isn't it?
Whilst I understand their plight, each country has their own unique set of problems to deal with, hardly our fault that there's a stretch of water called the English Channel that has helped keep out unwelcome visitors since time immemorial, is it?
Best they start dealing with the problem post haste, before Marine Le Pen gains even more popularity:

Actually, immigration seems to be benefiting Britain - I'm astounded that nobody seems to have posted a link to today's news, so here it is

"Britain is uniquely successful, even more than Germany, in attracting the most highly skilled and highly educated migrants in Europe."

Brilliant, so we have even less need for all those africans in Calais then.
Actually, If the british police they're asking for would be deployed in helping detect people clinging to the bottom of british camper vans, that might be of some use. As you say, prevention is better than cure - find them before while they're still on that side of the channel.

// as far as I can see, that is what they're calling for. //
That's fair enough. I think it's also a way of getting us involved so that it slowly evolves into more of a problem for us than it currently is.
I feel sorry for the people of Calais, but I think it's primarily their own government they should be looking to sort the problem out.

It does seem rather odd that the £5 billion we've supposedly benefited from doesn't appear to have been ploughed back into dealing with a crumbling NHS or an education system struggling with class sizes at infant/junior school level though.
In fact, we appear to have done so well out of it all that we have to give £1.7 billion back for having a growing economy!
Strange.

I would also like to say I disbelieve that the UK gains £20bn from European migrants. Given that any immigrant paying tax must be doing so because they have a job here that otherwise could have been given to a native, who would then have paid the same tax, there is a net gain of zero. In addition, the fact that the native who could have had the job now remains on welfare means that there is a net expense to the taxpayer.
I suspect UCL economists are not considering the larger picture, and consequently missing vital calculations. If this is so, then it makes me ponder on why they are given the job if they come up with erroneous conclusions and then try to fool us all with them. But ignoring the larger picture in order to convince folk up is down, and in is out, seems a common practice from 'authorities' these days.

Well …Is this a record?...I totally agree with you in one respect, Ludwig. I said in my 0729 response, “However, until they DO get here, they have nothing to do with us.” That seems to gel perfectly with your later comment, “They're only a problem for Britain if they manage to get here.”
Lots of people fall asleep on lilos, Svejk, but let’s make it a kayak, then. He could have been a wide-awake dark-skinned right-wing-funding Bournemouth merchant banker who’d just made a major profit on the Stock Exchange and rather miscalculated the sea-conditions. Pity to lose HIM, I’m sure YOU’D agree!

I think some one, some where In the police depart has got this totally wrong, why should the British Police with paid Expenses by the Uk taxes go to French and help, I think the French are taking the zizz, we have already contributed £5000000, would they like us to wipe their @rses as well. & people wonder why the Immigrants want to come here, soft old UK
No probs Chill. Very good prognosis. Dukes B classification. 19 lymph nodes removed. Non cancerous. Small amount of minor blood cells may have some signs of cancer. A 2.5% benefit to me if I opted for chemo. I took up the offer and if mis/match test is OK on the 18th I should be on a 6 month course of chemo in 8 three weekly cycles. (Capecitabine). Cat scan on Friday. I appreciate your enquiry. Thanks.
I find it ironic that many a British bobby on demo duty here envied the French CRS with their water cannon, CS Gas, Baton rounds, and Baton charges with the capability to disperse any unruly mobs. After Blair Peach our SPG was disbanded. We had two water cannon(Never deployed) and the recent request by Boris to purchase two ex German water cannon so far denied. Post Broadwater Farm the police purchased CS gas and Baton rounds. So far never deployed to my knowledge. AND the French police want our assistance. Our police is impotent when it comes to Public Disorder in the UK. The French always seemed to manage OK in the past with their disorders and riots but I suppose their Socialist Government has fettered them as ours did when the SPG was disbanded.
We should not even give the French the £12m to help bolster security in Calais.
As said before it is not our problem and I am sure that if the tables were reversed we wouldn't get a penny from France.
If they need cash help let them apply to the EU, they have enough money thanks to Britain.
Regarding Marine Le Pen, perhaps she would soon solve the problem?
