Any hurricane that is particularly bad ie Floyd & Katrina to name two are retired so to speak and not used again!! Think they said that the next one is called Hurricane Lee!
On a lighter note I have heard it said that they are usually named after women as they come in a frenzy and take your house and car with them when they go!!!!
this question was asked in science last month: here

Hurricane names are a set list that they alternate every 6 years - names used last year will be used again in 2010. When there is a major storm - like Katrina that name is retired, and replaced. Until 1979 only female names were used - since then it alternates M/F.
Atlantic vs Pacific etc have different lists.
