first they laid the problem on the truckers now it's the landlords that are forced to do checks on potential tennants. It's time to get this whole border business sorted, we are an Island For gawds sake, why is it so difficult?

It's a case of seeing an easy win by passing responsibility on to those who have no power to object. One can genuinely claim it helps with the problem, and not have the hassle themselves any more.
[i](Company management realised this many years ago which is why the higher positions can spend their time on political maneuvering and enjoy playing the market game, since they have delegated management responsibilities downwards and convinced the fools that is how it should be and one is trying to get out of stuff they "should be doing" if not accepted. That is why we all seem to be expected to manage ourselves, know everything about everything and who one needs to contact to get something done, and convince them; or it's your fault, you are to blame. It's a good con trick if you have a powerless or a gormless group to lean on.)[i]

"Surely we lost our Island Status with the opening of the Channel Tunnel (a Land-Link) in 1994?"
A pedantic point, Baldric, but not really the issue. Very, very few (if any) illegals arrive via the Chunnel. Most arrive by other means.
I most certainly would not object to taxpayers' money being spent keeping out illegal entrants. In fact that's what I thought was already being done (albeit not entirely succesfully). As has been said, once again it is people going about their lawful business (truck owners and now landlords) who are being tasked with making up for the deficiencies of the Border Agency.

"I wonder how many people come here on the pretence of a holiday. What can border control do about them?"
Address the 'control' part?
Checked in, checked out again, like normal countries and if here's a scintilla of doubt, turn them round in arrivals. They can always appeal at our embassy when they're on home soil.
