Sorry to harp on but why/how is this an issue in 21st century Britain, when we are giving away over £12 BILLION in foreign aid?

I simply cannot grasp it and doubt I ever will.
Anyone else of a similar view?

I suppose our poor have a benefits system to fall back on.

It doesn't always work though.
Foreign aid, apart from its humanitarian side, buys influence and helps to keep the UK at the top table. We're a rich country so that spending must be considered money well spent.
/// must be considered money well spent. ///
Really? Why must it?
I meant it must be considered well spent by the people allocating it. Not everyone might agree.

Foreign aid does buy influence.
Glad to see that you are being your usual delightful self this Sunday morning, Bouncer.

The answer lies in between. Aid does give the UK influence with a claw-back through trade, also there are parts of the world needing support and assistance, West Africa at the moment comes to mind. However, my own view is 12 billion is too much - cut it back to what it was when the Coalition came in (8 billion) and use the difference in the UK to sort out issues such as this, education needs and a little bit on the NHS, though I believe that there ought to be serious cuts there (the layers of management and inefficiency that clog the system up) - and also in tackling flood defences and potholes.
Potholes are down to the council.
More funds (than already given) can be made available from central government. Also helps stimulate short-term employment.
ummmm

Must be reassuring to Sandy to know he is not all alone on that cloud in cuckoo land.
The Archbishop wants to look at how the church care for people and the
elderly 800, 000 of us will be alone Christmas the cathedral and churches don't put on a meal or gathering for them they are in their palaces and have family . I met Welby and not a patch on Rowan no wonder if stepped down. Also people who go to food banks have to get a form to attend and there was on Radio a woman who shop lifted for food as food bank didn't give fresh food only rice tinned beans, they are on the list to give and then says they have enough pasta want sugar!!!!
I'd rather be alone on my cloud, and right. ☺

China received £27.4million in British aid payments despite boasting the world's second biggest economy

/// In July, an Ethiopian farmer was given permission to use thousands of pounds of taxpayers’ money to sue the British Government, because he argues that the £1.3 billion provided by Britain over the past five years has propped up a vicious, authoritarian regime that has forced thousands of villagers from their own land. ///

I wondered how long it would be before someone took the opportunity to have a dig at the church, the church and many of it's unsung volunteers do much for the hungry and homeless but don't necessarily shout it from the roof tops.

/// Giles Fraser, a Church of England parish priest in Kennington, London - and former canon chancellor of St Paul's Cathedral - told the BBC: "It's not the bishops' job [to find answers], that's the politicians' job. What the bishops are doing is reflecting the experience they have seen through their clergy on the ground. ///

/// "My church in south London is opening as a homeless shelter, we have people sleeping in our pews overnight, we are cooking for them. Homelessness in London has gone up 60 per cent in the last two years, this is the reality. Please acknowledge this." ///

No one is hungry in this country unless they choose to be.
I am. It's all this talk of food.
TTT....nonsense. We've had this discussion before!!
I wish these people in Ivory Towers would stop meddling. Maybe Lambeth Palace has a few empty bedrooms to house the homeless. I a not religious either but Ido remember that there is a piece said by Jesus I the bible saying "Render unto Caesar those that are Caesars". In other words the Clergy should keep our of politics. Like TTT says I don't understand anyone in this country should be hungry with our generous benefits system. On they there and I do not condone the amount spent on Foreign Aid. They don't I know where it's going half the time.
