It is reported that Bob Hoskins left just over £1 million in his will ......... I would've thought he was worth much more than that, thoughts please?

He could have trusted over a lot seven years or more ago, therefore reducing his exposure to death duties.

Probably spent a lot. He seemed the generous type. Not that I knew him, of course, but I can imagine him picking up all the bills in restaurants and lending money to whoever needed it for business projects or whatever.

I don't have any thoughts on this St P. It's his private personal business and it's not for me to "have thoughts" on it. £1m seems quite a tidy amount to me.

I agree saintpeter........successful film star leaving only a million........that is nothing today. House in London or a flat would certainly come to £1 and that is without investments.

Seems odd.......but there will surely be a simple explanation perhaps in line with the first two posts.

I agree with dtcwordfan - a good tax accountant can vanish a fortune quite easily. Trusts, sales to relatives, "borrowings" against the estate, offshore investments.

I've seen multimillionaires getting Legal Aid for court cases because their assets and income are'nt visible.

Mrs sqad tells me that one of the contestants in Strictly Come Dancing last night, was in a pop group in the past with three others and earned £80 million.

He recently went bankrupt.

So one can quickly spend one's "earnings."

I'm not sure why we should all think that just because Hoskins was a film star, he should be fabulously wealthy. While I admired his work as an actor, he was hardly Hollywood A List. Maybe he was a generous as people on here have said. Anyway, I think "just over a £1 million" is hardly chicken feed, is it ?

Much of his money could have been invested. The 1 million might have just been his cash in the bank.

Just for clarity's sake, a friend of mine brilliantly described many of the trusts..."Until your death, your family or nominees own the wine bottle; you own the contents." So, properly set up, the will is masking what he is truly worth.

and disposal of the estate is not exactly private and of course there is a tax side to this - also not that private....Wills are available after probate has been granted.

How many wives did he have ? THAT can be expensive...


He also went to Hollywood and turned out some awful SuperMario brothers film which he cheerfully admitted he did for money and nothing else.
