Serious question. What exactly do they gain from such acts?

It's far more likely to be a simple system overload (because so many people have got new devices today) than a DDoS attack.

But the Lizard Group have been claiming that they were going to carry it out for weeks!

Maybe they do it just to be a pain in the backside; in the early days, a lot of computer viruses just did things like delete files on your computer to try and make it inoperable, and the creators of those viruses had nothing to gain from such actions other than a perverse satisfaction in causing some people misfortune.

Whoever has done whatever to the Xbox live site has caused some major headaches in this house :(

There isn't really any evidence that this is a DDOS. They are witnessing a surge, but Christmas is the time most new gamers join. The surges are in places where the games makers are known to host from, so that would be consistant with a huge volume of traffic from new users registering.

If it is a malicious attack, there are many reasons why multi-Billion dollar corporations are targetted. My favourite theory is that it is a group of disgruntled Windows 8 users.

I'm no detective but that at the very least sounds like a statement of intent!
Given that there was no such outage on Xmas Day in the last few years it seems to be too much of a coincidence.

Both XBox and PS were very old machines until last year. They both introduced new consoles in 2013, but they were expensive and there were not many new games optimised for them.
This year both machines have seen price dropped, coupled with more games available for them, means they are a far more attractive purchase this year.

I'm with Gromit on this, I'm not convinced it's a DDoS attack at all. I know they threatened to take the Xbox Live network down but they knew there would be a high load on the system (as did lots of people) due to new users, so it was easy to make it look like they did it.

No wonder I was having problems this evening. Gits. They mainly do it to be a pain, not much else to it. DDOS attacks are so uninventive too.

The launch price of the Xbox One in the UK was £429. The priced was dropped in February, and then again in October, to £329. £100 saving on last Christmas is pretty significant. Apparently sales have been poor in 2014, and the cheaper PS4 seems to be winning the console war. Microfts head of Xbox in Japan was sacked due to terrible sales there.

I don't know about this specific incident but people do these things in general for the kick they get out of it largely.
And also the money on occasions. Take Russia for example: there's a huge number of highly trained programmers in that country with a severe shortage of appropriate jobs. So there's a large skill base open to offers from dubious elements to create either mayhem or make a point. Some saying the Sony hack was an example

here's one of the hackers (or maybe he just claims to be) and he did it "to expose poor security", "to amuse ourselves" and had no regrets about forcing "a couple of kids to spend their time with their families instead of playing games"

Sooooo, were they spending time with their families on Christmas day then? or were they twatting around on their computers thinking that they know best? What do they know about being a hard working parent who has saved to buy their child a special treat for christmas only for some middle class *** to think that he knows better! Personally i's attache electrodes to their balls and give them shocks every 2 minutes for 8 days.
