Oh so just because it happened to be from uncouth Fry it is perfectly acceptable?

Note the BBC's response, first they address him as Stephen instead of using his surname as is generally the case with others, then go on to excuse him because that is how he is.

/// “Stephen, whose irreverence and style is extremely well-known to
viewers, ///

And what could be said regarding the Independence's reporting:

/// In happier news, Fry chose the Baftas weekend to make his first public appearance with his new husband Elliott Spencer, who watched on from the wings as the actor won the affections not just of Birdman stars Michael Keaton and Ed Norton, but also a kiss from Cuba Gooding Jr. ///

All lovies together, yuk, please pass the sick bucket.

Swearing has it's place and it's certainly not a sign of ignorance. Some jokes just wouldn't be as funny without swearing.
//Swearing has it's place//

Yep. end of
ay, there's the rub - some people believe it wasn't out of place, and some people do. Ho Hum, wouldn't it be boring if we were all the same :)
"AOG also makes a good point about the well known lefty organizartions response"

No he doesn't, as you'll see if you care to look at the link I posted about the defence of "Jeremy" (Clarkson)
Well I suppose there are some that found Morecambe and Wise, Arthur Haines, Dick Emery excruciating unfunny because they never swore every other word during their gags. That's sad.
He didnt just use a swear word. He introduced someone as x effing x, which is disgusting and uncalled for.
He said it was "pissing down" with stars. Why? Not funny and not clever.
He kissed a man on the lips. Again unnecessary.
He imitated Stephen Hawkins synthesised voice. Was that amusing? No it was cruel and silly.
He talked about his toyboy husband - as if enough hasnt already been said

Why should people have to switch off a programme they wanted to watch due to the self obsessed foul mouthed commentator? Watershed or not it was not even slightly entertaining and BBC should not defend using this has been.
The *** word should be a verb & not used as a noun.
How is swearing a sign of ignorance? Almost everyone does it. Stephen Fry is an extremely knowledgable man. And the way it was said was in a joking way, to imply how lucky they were to have Tom Cruise presenting an award.
If there was an award for being boorish then Fry would win it hands down.
So he swore after 9pm once or twice in a couple of hours.

On the recent CBB, there was swearing every 5 minutes for 3 weeks, whats the difference?

Get a grip OAG.
For those that didn't see it (I didn't)
Tom looks horrified.
.

WARNING naughty word alert!

Grasscarp...how on earth do you cope with life?
Talbot....what a horrified smile he has there...
Talbot, is that really what all this fuss is about? The mind boggles!
Yes, Naomi, and he said it was peeing down with stars....
BAFTA knew what they were getting when they chose Stephen to host, I knew more or less what to expect when watching the programme.

Gratuitous repetitive swearing with no context is boring - delivered after watershed in jest and used in this fashion is a different matter.
Pocket Rocket,
"Almost every body does it" A lot of people drive a car whilst on the phone. Doesn't make it right. If you swear and that makes you a very knowledgeable person, then, YOU tell me why it is not a sign of ignorance. I was just giving an example of a paradox. I was not being judgemental on Fry. BTW a paradox is a contradiction in terms!
He was extremely funny in Jeeves & Wooster .

Apart from that i cant really see why he is described as 'one of Britain’s best-loved house-hold names '

What else has he achieved in the entertainmemnt world ?

The usual response against anyone who still think that certain standards need to be retained.

I have it a guess that besides the odd swear words Stephen Fry's standards are far superior than many of the posters on here!
