It seems Mrs Harperson thinks so! I know there are battleaxes on both sides but really it's not a requirement.....is it?

yeah you can be too priddy for politics
but this doesnt seem to be a problem in British Politics

Dame Edna Everage - housewife superstar - was asked whether she hadnt taken up Australian politics because it would vulgarise her....

Churchill commented to Bessie Braddock ( Mr Churchill I believe you are drunk ) - Madam I believe you are ugly bit the idfference is that tomorrow I will be sober....
Neither of them are pretty. The one on the right has got a weird face and eyes too big for her skull.
Its like feminism never happened
Its a well known fact the higher your cheekbones and the bigger your boobs the smaller your capacity is for intelligent thought. For goodness sake :-(
I've sometimes thought thats what stopped Michael portillo reaching the top of the greasy pole.
I can see what your trying to do there Sandy ;-))
I know I've said this before, but Simon Danczuk is batting well above his average there!

Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder
I was going to say something along the lines of what Retrochic said. Is it impossible for a woman to have beauty and brains?
Harman's comments are like something a dinosaur of a man might have said in the 50s.
Or perhaps she meant that the woman looked too frail to get involved in the rough and tumble of politics. Either way it's nonsense.
To address the OP - an image can affect the ability to make a good point and be listened to seriously, which is wrong, but it's human nature.

As Ms. Harman has said, I can't hear her telling another woman that she too pretty for politics and ought to be in a pop group.

Pick-up line.
I know I was.
^ fibber. ;-)
I think if the MP is very attractive they are more likely to end up in the papers and not for the right reasons which could have a negative effect on their quality of work for their constituency.
it has certainly hindered my political aspirations !
I think I've changed my mind now, having read a newspaper article about it. I think Ms Harman was being complimentary to mrs Danczuk about her looks, while being self-deprecating about her own and fellow politicians. It was probably a tongue in cheek comment that she's forgotten about. Mrs Danczuk herself said she was complimented by the remark.

I can. It's the kind of thing a normal person would say intended simply as a jokey compliment or banter, which they'd later get crucified for - ironically by people like Harperson herself.
