It does look as though they were playing 'Chicken'. He was very lucky to have got up and walked away. He didn't make it to the other side though, did he ? Idiots!

Why?
The lorry driver had spotted the kids, any good driver will anticipate that it is quite possible the kids might make a dash for the other side of the road. So he would have had his right foot hovering over the brake pedal, The video shows there was plenty of time to stop when the first boy made a run for it.

I am not sure that this IS a game of chicken. Rather, it was a serious misjudgment by the boys involved. Its hard to tell, but it looks as if the HGV was going at a fair lick and I think it is incredible that he didn't hit the boy with more force. My sympathies still lie with the driver though. If I had been behind the wheel, it would have been me that ended up in the Hospital, with heart failure !
When I was working up in Town 25 years ago, I met a Tube train driver, that was involved with a suicide in front of his train, and he told me that it was 4 weeks before he could return to work afterwards.

The breaking retardation as shown on the dashcam shows great reactions by a good driver though if accurate,87km/ph is a bit naughty on an undivided carriageway. Lucky and stupid lad. He owes that driver his life.
When I dealt with jumpers at Lancaster Gate Underground it was the RMT who insisted the driver had paid t/o from driving whether they wanted it or not!!
