No idea what you're talking about, andy. But if you want to pull it for some strange reason, just do it.
Svejk - "No idea what you're talking about, andy. But if you want to pull it for some strange reason, just do it."

I appreciate you may not understand my point Svejk, but for the record, I don't pull threads 'for some strange reason' - and my point was in the nature of a heads-up because The Ed is on line.
I’m afraid to say that if Ms Veiszadeh becomes embroiled in an issue such as this she may well be subject to hatred. Whether that’s right or wrong is another matter but the T-Shirts in question simply reflect the views widely held in Australia (and probably in the UK too, though such sentiments would meet with official disgust and probably legal action).

“Maldives. The are a democracy and hold fair elections.”

Have you ever been to the Maldives, McMouse? I have – about a dozen times. Believe me, their version of democracy is not quite the same as ours. As you can see from the link that has been usefully provided by Svejk, freedom of religion is non-existent. You could not settle in the Maldives (or indeed any other Muslim country) and build a Christian chapel as Muslims have settled in the UK and built mosques. The Maldives first held elections in 2008. However, in 2014 the Maldivian Supreme Court annulled an election which was seen as free and fair by outside observers. Members of the country’s Election Commission who oversaw the vote criticised that decision and were promptly jailed for their dissent. Political unrest is now very evident with the usual problem of Muslim hardliners using force to impose their traditional views on a population that has seen the green grass of Western values (through the huge numbers of tourists which visit the country). Foreigners are allowed to travel only to permitted islands (which are usually resort islands). No outsiders see what the Maldivian authorities have not given their approval for them to see. Similarly few Maldivians see the relaxed atmosphere (not to mention alcohol and women in summer frocks) which prevails on the tourist islands. Your chosen example of the Maldives as a “decent” Muslim country is a bit misplaced. In fact, having travelled to several, I cannot name one.

Ms Veiszadeh and her fellow Muslims enjoy freedoms which they could not even dream of if they lived in an Islamic nation. I think her indignation at the “clear off if you don’t like it” T-Shirts is that she doesn’t like the choice the slogan poses for her.

In 1990 the CIA was asked why it only had two operatives who spoke Pushtu and experience in Afghanistan and he said
for chrissakes you have to accept diarrhoea as a way of life .... [ and presumably not many good american doughboys would ]
golly gosh dhimmi - protected status - Historically, dhimmi status was originally applied to Jews, Christians, and Sabians. This status later also came to be applied to Zoroastrians, Mandaeans, Hindus, and Buddhists.[8][9]

just in case people/readers thought they were clothes ( dish dash, burqa )
or imps ( shaitan, afreet )
