Historically the difficulty was that Blair and his political cohorts excluded all the Arabic-speaking diplomats [Camels] from any discussions and so the rump that was left advised - "Go in and shig them"

because if broadcasters say Islamic State it comes out the same as Islamic state, ie an actual state like Morocco or Qatar. It doesn't matter in print but on the air you have to make clear what you're talking about.

The area that these people occupy is not a State, Islamic or otherwise. For the reasons of clarity, it is prefixed with 'so called' to denote it is a self proclaimed State and not one recognised in international law.

IS are relying on the fact that if you say a lie often enough, people will believe it. Which is why it should be corrected wherever possible.

Members of IS/ISIS/ISIL don’t like to be referred to as “Daesh”, formed from an Arabic acronym that means much the same as the English one, ISIS.
Their objection is because it sounds very like two other Arabic words, one meaning someone who crushes things underfoot and the other someone who creates conflict.
It would be vastly simpler if we just adopted ‘daesh’ because it…
a) is in the appropriate language
b) is short and to the point
c) annoys them!
