But if the Tories win next month, they are committed to having an in/out referendum. Whatever our own personal views on the EU, here on AB, a Referendum will tear the Tory Party asunder, as the Europe issue has done before, and even more of them will leave and join UKIP.

He is probably banking on UKIP tanking in the General Election, so the Tory des enters have no where to go.
It does not look like the Tories will get a majority. If they form a coalition with the Libs or SNP, ditching the referendum will be a condition. Cameron does not want a referendum, so if he can weasel out of it and blame someone else, then he'll be happy.

Gromit...difficult to argue with much of what you say here ! But there are still some on AB and in the general public, that think that Farage and his rag bag army are going to change the face of British politics !
Because I think dave secretly wished he had never made the pledge to have a Referendum, its my opinion that he won't be too sorry to lose next month.

Venator...in 1997, 2001 and 2005, it was Labour that got re-elected, not just Blair. Labour was hugely popular and the Tories weren't. See Wiki for the full details :::::

There is an argument to be made that if he had not abdicated in favour of the awful Gordon Brown, and remained Leader, he may very well have got the Labour party an unprecedented 4th win.
