I've been at quizes when cheating has been rife, I now hardly ever bother because I know it's basically a googling contest. But chess, I never thought that would happen, what hapenned to personal pride eh?

One of these days you really ought to read about the history of the world chess championship. No need to go into massive amounts of depth to discover that they were all cads determined to go to almost any lengths to secure a psychological advantage. Cheating? Much harder in those days, but you can be sure that at least one or two would have thought about it!
Only ever cheated once - a good few years ago, I had been treated to a meal out by my Daughters and we drank copious amounts of wine.

Visited a pub on the way home, quiz in progress, we joined in and yes cheated - we won and donated the money there and then back into the fund - it was for the local Hospice.

Never since.

jim no need to patronise, I played tournament chess myself, I know the fun and games putting off the oponent etc, all gamesmanship but none of us would simply cheat using a phone that's a new ball game.
I didn't know you had played tournament chess, not meaning to patronise. And besides, the levels they went to in the WCC were extreme even for chess players!
That was bare-faced cheating, the guy visited the toilet enough times to make it obvious something was going on.

I once helped someone to cheat in a pub quiz, I was at home and they texted me for the answers to a couple of questions. I don't think they won anyway.
On chess, well, there's the extraordinary build-up to the world chess championship to be held in Reykjavik in 1972 between the world's greatest (and possibly nastiest) chess players - the late Bobby Fischer- and Boris Spassky (after whom one of my cats was named).
was the cat any good at playing chess ?

to a certain extent - why go in for a game if you re going to cheat ?

I must confess I am a crossword addict. I try to answer using my personal knowledge. I will resort to my reference library if I am stuck on an answer.
I have always believed the answers are there to be found if you are willing to take up the challenge and if all else fails I research.I do not consider myself a cheat in this regard but there again I am not playing an International game for reward.I am happy to help other ABers on the crossword site with answers they are stuck on but will never admit my assistance is purely from my intellect alone, Our local Pub Quiz ,however, was sadly discontinued due to useage of I phones etc
Cheating has always happened in every competitive activity. Every sport, every game, everything. If there's a way to cheat, someone will be doing it.
