If Clegg And Farage Lost...?
This is just one opinion poll of many - but does anyone know what would happen to both Clegg and Farage if they lost the battle for their respective seats in the forthcoming General Election?
Can a party be lead by someone who isn't actually an MP?
I mean, Farage isn't an MP at the moment, and that doesn't mean he can't lead UKIP - but if he lost South Thanet...what then?
Is there a precedent?

parties used to be led by peers who weren't in the Commons, so I suppose so. And Sturgeon isn't.
Sturgeon joke:
Nicola Sturgeon is touring Perthshire in the First Minister’s chauffeur driven car.
Suddenly a cow jumps out into the road. They hit it full on and the car comes to a stop.
Nicola in her usual jaunty manner, says to the chauffeur :
" You get out and check - you were driving."
The chauffeur gets out, checks and reports that the animal is dead.
" You were driving, go and tell the farmer," says Nicola , ”I can’t afford to be blamed for anything.”
The chauffeur walks up the drive to the farmhouse and returns five hours later totally plastered, his hair ruffled and with a big grin on his face.
" My God, what happened to you ?" asks Nicola .
The chauffeur replies : " When I got there, the farmer opened his best bottle of single malt whisky, The wife gave me a slap-up meal and the daughter made love to me."
" What on earth did you say?" asks Nicola .
" I knocked on the door and when it was answered, I said to them, I'm Nicola Sturgeon ’s chauffeur and I've just killed the cow."

I think Farage has already said he will resogn if he fails to get the seat.
There is a very competent woman who is his natural successor, but I can't be bothered to look up her name.
Clegg will just bog off to some EU job and makes lots of money for doing *** all.
If Cameron fails to win a majority he will be kicked onto the back benches, to be succeded by May (or possibly Boris).
If Miliband fails to get a majority, he will either form some kind of pact/alluance/ coalition or be sat opposte Cameron on the back benches.
This time next year, we could have four different leaders.

In theory, both could continue to lead their Parties, but I doubt if the Parties would let them ! Looking at Clegg's seat in Sheffield Hallam, Labour are getting very close in the Polls, so its a real possibility that he might lose. I doubt very much if he will want to stay on as Leader, even if the Party want ask him to.
Farage is very different. He has tried to get into Parliament 5 times before and failed every time. He even stood against the Speaker in 2010 ! He has put his reputation on the line since 2010, but if he fails to gain a seat next week, I have no doubt he will keep blundering on. But who cares !
