/// The mother wanted a memorial and there is one in her home town. ///
That is not on the spot where he was butchered, on your reasoning perhaps it would have also been in order just to erect a memorial to Stephen Lawrence in his mother's home town, all the way over in far off Jamaica?

/// It was a heinous and terrible crime but sadly the fact is he was targeted specifically because he was a soldier rather than any random civilian who just happened to be a soldier. ///
And wasn't WPC Yvonne Fletcher targeted because she was a policewoman?
And wasn't Stephen Lawrence targeted because he was black?

Why the difference? I don't know AOG but the 3 cases are not the same. I haven't checked but my understanding is that Yvonne Fletcher was caught in crossfire rather than selected at a one-off incident, Stephen Lawrence was picked on by a small group of racist thugs. Lee Rigby was picked because he was a soldier by extremists who support a terrorist group that are currently active and causing hell all over the world ie it's very much current and unresolved. Maybe the authorities don't want to incite further incident in their backyard.
To Lady J, no he was neither armed nor in uniform but they knew he was a soldier.

//an inauspicious manner?//
An understatement to say the least. This man was slaughtered - butchered - in cold blood on the streets of London by people who are sworn enemies of this country. His needless death at the very least warrants the construction of a memorial in Woolwich without reference to religious leaders and without concession to criticism or to the threat of reprisal.

Yes maybe, but that is the whole point of my thread it has been set, so why not a memorial to Lee?

No I understand that you are not making light of these killings.

If Lee Rigby's mother perseveres and campaigns and campaigns and campaigns and manages to collect a gathering of supporters. She might be considered such a pain in the proverbial to the establishment that her wish for a memorial is granted and who knows.She might even have a
Damehood bestowed on her though it should not be necessary to go that far.

ANOTHEOLDGIT, the mother said, 'I wanted to honour my and love my son but the only place I could lay my love was on the side of a road. It was devastating,' She has a memorial as pictured in your link and it appears to be a fitting tribute to him. The fact that it is in her home town does not detract from any meaning associated with it.
