How do these people get legal representation, do they have to pay for it themselves or are they granted legal aid?

I can't help you re the Legal Aid bit though...perhaps New Judge can elucidate for us.

each side in an employment tribunal bears its own costs ( so the loser doesnt pay the winners costs ) and I notice this has gone to appeal (EAT )

You can find no-win no fee lawyers even so

and the other thing you can do is get someone else to pay - pressure group and so on

sex doesnt equal gender altho ABers frequently confuse the two
