They just saw photos of beaches and smart hotels in the travel brochure and booked on sight. I bet the travel agents did not make them aware that there was a 1,000 km border with Libya and 30,000 Libyan refugees were living in Tunisia.
Now they have a choice to go or loose their holiday.

// Tunisia will probably find itself surplus to requirements in next year's brochures. //
People will still go. I went to Sharm a year after the bombs there, and stayed in the hotel that had been the target. A few years ago there were terrorist attacks in Marmaris, but several million Britons will visit this season.

As I mention previously, London was a target for the terrorists but we all still go there. It can happen anywhere.

// According to the Association of British Insurers, 40 per cent of all policies contain this standard exclusion, which effectively gives the insurer the right to turn down any terrorist-related claim. Many more will only offer partial cover in such incidents. //
Which means most 60% do not have a clause excluding terrorism.

Unlike several of the people referred to above as having "already booked", a friend of my wife specifically waits until something thoroughly unpleasant happens at a place he has always wanted to visit before booking a holiday there.
I've no idea how he gets on re holiday insurance, but he usually gets there for a lot less than he would otherwise have to pay. Oh...and he has always come home! (Yeah, I know...so far!)

I think it`s down to the individual insurers. My company says "We will not cover..Any claim that happens as a result of war, invasion, revolution, rebelion, act of foreign enemy or any similar event (except for any which the public did not know about at the time of purchase of this insurance and/or for annual multi-trip policies prior to the booking of any individual trip) So in other words, if it wasn`t all kicking off when you booked, you`re OK. War is defined by - war, whether declared or not, or any warlike activities, including using miliary force to achieve economic, geographic, nationalistic, political, racial, religious or other goals. It doesn`t mention the word Terrorism so that might be open to interpretation
"That rather defeats the point of getting insurance. Any company that had T&Cs like that would not get any business. "
you obviously have little if any knowledge of how insurance companies work...
they have clauses and legalese that can get them out of just about any possible situation....they will use any and all excuses possible to avoid paying on a claim if its possible

Hidden inside every insurance contract there's a clause that says 'We reserve the right not to pay you anything if we don't want to'.
You have to get your electron microscope out to find it but it's there.
It's the one the medical insurance use when they don't want to pay for cancer treatment because you didn't tell them about having an ingrowing toenail removed 40 years ago.

Last year my wife booked a holiday to Malta.I developed a stomach pain shortly after the booking. I went to our doctors who started the usual tests for constipation,IBS and Diverticulosis.Didn't think we needed to tell the travel insurance company I had a tummy ache.Turns out after further tests and a colonoscopy I had cancer of the colon and was told to cancel the holiday by the medicos. Our doctor wrote a letter stating she thought I was fit and well to travel when I first consulted her with the stomach problem. The Insurance refused to refund the holiday fee. It is like booking a holiday on a day you have a headache and three weeks later you find a brain tumour. No sympathy and no refund.Holiday Insurance companies are ***. Lloyds bank holiday Insurance is underwritten by AXA. I would never use them again.
