Football Racism In Russia
17 Answers
I was going to post in Sport but thought I'd raise in News.
A player from Ghana is sent off today for reacting to alleged 'monkey' taunts from the crowd.
This is yet another of a string of incidents in Russia who are due to hold the next World Cup. Should more be done to tackle this and what can really be expected when FIFA itself lacks credibility?

Although having said that, Russian society, esp in the big cities, is much more insanely violent than Ukraine's. Also, as with Ukraine, media coverage only ever really kicks off, so to speak, when it's too late to do anything about it.
Anyway, I can think of several million other reasons why Russia should not be hosting this tournament ...

How do you know that it is simply to get a reaction?
And how would they know that they were never going to get another one?
Given that 99% of the abuse is suffered without any sort of reaction back.
The idea that you tolerate bigotry in the hope that it will just go away seems to me to have been disproved throughout history.

There is much more abuse towards sport's stars than the hearing of monkey chants, why is the previous classed more serious?

ichkeria...I agree.
By tolerating bigotry in the hope that it will just go away, is tantamount to appeasement. These eastern european countries have a long way to go in changing their ways over racism. We were in the same place years ago here in Britain, and we didn't change for the better by ignoring this kind of behaviour.

The treatment of Chris Froome and the Sky team is of course a disgrace
This however was a question about racism in sport in Russia, whether you happen to think it's worse or not
What is most depressing to me about this is the condemnation of Frimpong from his own club chairman, especially as this is a team based in an ethnically diverse republic with a Russian minority - almost exclusively white though all the same,
The argument always fired back by FIFA UEFA etc is that somehow by hosting these tournaments the countries involved will 'change'. When in reality we all now that that is not the case
There is no political will to tackle racism in Russia: in fact it is incidentally whipped up by nationalistic fervour. There isn't even any more the pretence that all the Soviet peoples are one big family. Russian nationalism is getting its revenge for decades of being subjugated to the Soviet cause

Ichkeria,
Yes,I was surprised at the reaction of Frimpong's own club which appeared to minimise the incident. Of course, players who react in the way he did are more than likely to be dismissed but surely, more has to be done to give protection to players from the clubs and authorities. Alas, this does not seem to be improving and as you state, Russia does not seem to accept the gravity of the problem.
By failing to accept a situation exists will inevitably result in this ugly face of football appearing in the headlines at intervals.

Retrocop...no, not really.
If this sort of thing is going on, then it should be against the law in whatever country it is occurring in. Russia is due to hold the next World Cup, and there will be many non-white players, together with 100,000's of non-white fans, so its potentially a huge issue. I am not sure that Russia should have been awarded the tournament in the first place, although that is probably a discussion for another thread.
Anyway, some minor irritation from a few numbskull Trolls on an internet forum is a long way from open racism on the playing field. My policy of ignoring the numskulls seems to be working very well, as being ignored is what these people hate the most. I reserve the right to report the more lurid of the attacks though, as I do from time to time.

Yes ag Russia is in denial
They are in a curious position tho
The World Cup is being bankrolled by Putin's cronies who are currently at serious risk of a FIFA style expose by the U.S. authorities
On the other hand they have to show some sort of acceptable face to the outside world : so they'll have to mix aggression and defiance with a 'we're nice really' facade
