"Bazile....its obvious what you were trying to say"

no it wasnt .why question the merits of the mission on this particular thread ?

do you think theyll be questioning it at his funeral ?
I remember reading that they were flying so low over the water that the altimeters, obviously, were useless. So each airplane had a light fore and aft angled such that when they were at the critical height for dropping the bomb, the twin beams of light coincided on the surface of the water. I don't remember if Wallis devised this or someone else.
stuey...no Wallis had nothing to do with the lights, although the backroom boys at the Air Ministry sorted it.
In the film Guy Gibson saw the two spotlights on the lead singer, but that was a myth.
What was a myth, Sqad?
Usual tripe from bazille/PP and the anti British the raid made a huge difference estimated to have ended the war 2 years early read up on it. You just cannot bring yourselves to honour our war heroes without sniping can you. Disgusting.
That it was Gibson who thought of the two lights whilst at a stage show in the West End of London.
TTT...we have to agree to differ i am afraid.
OK. thanks.
I'm steering clear of all this flak...Over and out.
Me too........angels bearing one five......returning to base.

Love to ...got a link?
here is just 1 paragraph of this article in the Scotsman:
http://www.scotsman.com/news/uk/dambusters-true-impact-revealed-70-years-on-1-2932144
"The cost of repairing the damage caused by 617 Squadron’s raid ran to the equivalent of £5.9 billion in today’s money and 7,000 workers who would otherwise have been building the Atlantic Wall to prevent the D-Day landings had to be called away to fix the ruined dams." - This alone helped enormously on D-Day. The anti British have always sought to denigrate the efforts of these great men, just get your heads out of your arisses and do some research. Glad we don't have to rely on you treacherous lot to defend anything.
Is the 2 years thing in that article?

Oh dear how sad, that a thread such as this as once again turned into a slanging match, but to be fair I did not notice any 'Anti-British' comments, and you all know that I would be the first to notice if there had been.
You can blame your mate bazwillrun for that AOG.
Bazile asked a perfectly legitimate question.
I see that TTT is still looking for a link that says the mission shortened the war by an estimated two years...

stoo

you are quite right - in the book Guy G tries triangulation wires (!)
but they are blown away in the slipstream

and someone suggests two searchlights that "merge" - I thought that was the navigator
Talbot

google effect of the dam busters raid

and you get a lot - s.a.

You have some economic data and also the opinion of Albert speer ( 'not much'). You may "well answer he would say that wouldnt he" - but if you ask Germans about the effect of Enigma none of them say " not much really ".
and finally the opinion of that well known anti Brit Sir Arthur harris 'hare-brained'
