Why Are Our Children So Unhappy?

kids have no downtime to relax and enjoy themselves. They are tested academically so often, and are under pressure to get excellent grades. They are on their phones all the time, posting selfies, being judged on their appearance. I'm so glad I'm not a teenager now, and that my son was just about grown up before all this started.
When I was a child in the 50s/60s, life was much simpler. We didn't have all this modern technology.
We used to play all the old fashioned games, and my mother was always at home with us. I never worried about my appearance, friends liked you for who you were, not what you looked like or what you had.
I don't ever remember being unhappy.

Agree with Gromit. The children who live near me are transported to and from school, supervised constantly when they are there and just recently I have noticed when they're out in the evening, playing football or riding their scooters etc, there is at least one parent watching them. A neurosis can be catching.
I didn't know that a child HAD to be happy at school, the function of the institute was that between 9.am and 4 p.m, the child was taught how to behave, do as they were told and learn to prepare themselves for the world that was awaiting them.
If they objected then they were sent to the headmaster's study and caned........all quite simple and civilised.

The children in my area have been off school for the thick end of a month and will continue to be so for around the next three weeks (after their teachers have has two "inset days" to prepare them for the coming year, despite having had the same six weeks off that the children have).
Children are unhappy because they have little imagination and little idea how to amuse themselves unless it involves staring at some electrical device. Their parents are complicit in this because they have provided the funds for all these devices which simply spawn envy, worry and disenchantment.

Smart Phones and iPads have the ability to make children very happy. There are lots of stimulating games which involve the imagination and are educational - and children like them. Obviously if they are doing one activity too much, then that not beneficial, but children I see do not over do gadget usage.

As with anything too much generalization going on here. I too have seen kids not overdoing it, I have also seen some of them overdoing it.
I still don't think generally kids are anymore unhappy than others of bygone years. The reasons for being down may have changed but not the overall amount of miserableness.

TTT....I don't know how one measures the happiness of children.....do you ask them?
In Menorca, Summer Schools are a big deal where they learn to play tennis and of course learning to sail which is popular. This is on a daily basis through the summer with lunch provided.....of course there is a fee.
Are they happier?.....no idea.

Happy -or Content? I know a lot of happy kids but they are never content -always wanting the latest this or that. It would depend on how the questionaire was worded and how the answers deciphered. Body Image and bullying -is that new? Don't think so it was there when I was a school nothing changes except now its addressed in a different way.

And that has always been the case where I live, but this year just before the holidays, I overheard a group of teachers saying that this year they were going to group all the years "inset days" together so as to make one whole week to add on to the beginning of the holiday, so as to make it cheaper for the parents to book a holiday abroad, yeah!
I wonder how they are going to prepare themselves for all the new terms throughout the rest of the year? Just goes to show that these inset days are just another wheeze to add even more holidays to their now already excessive number of holidays.
