Should This Country Become A Republic?
80 Answers
Today Queen Elizabeth II becomes Britain's longest serving monarch.
It was suggested by a certain Left-Wing radio presenter, that when our Queen's reign finally comes to an end, the country should consider scrapping the monarchy and become a Republic, ruled by a President.
What could be gained by this, we are already ruled by a politician?
What do other ABers think?

Oddly enough anotheoldgit , I go to a polling station every 5 years or so to select my choice for Member of Parliament, I would have thought the same polling station could be used to allow me to put a cross on my selection for President.

It should already be. Olly Cromwell gave the country the chance but the regime he offered mean folk foolishly asked an elite to return so they could bow down to him. Royalty is now an anachronism, allowing a family to live in luxury on the State. But why would we need a president ? This is always suggested and seems to be the nonsense of replacing one irrelevance with another. We already have a parliament and an elected leader of it. Even if that leader was chosen by the members of the largest party and not the people. We need parliamentary reform, but we can get rid of the royal part first.
Name a royal state duty that has any importance.
The best I can think of is meeting and greeting another irrelevant elite from another country. I don't think it happens that much that five minutes with the PM who wishes them a nice visit, couldn't cover.
If you think visiting other countries important, get a few diplomats to do the job in their spare time.

In answer to the question; yes Britain should become a Republic.
In answer to some of the points raised;
Not all Republicans are left wing, they come from both left and right.
Why do people immediately think President Blair? Were we to have a Republic, then I would suggest it be run on a non political basis with an election every 4/5 years.
