The police have announced that the wife had certain injuries, and that they are now treating this tragic case as murder, obviously committed by the husband.
Does anyone else agree, it would have been better for all those left behind if the police had not made public their findings, what can be possibly gained now?

This is the major problem with 24-hour rolling news - people have become accustomed to having all the facts instantly - so the media will go with 'as near as' to get the news out there, and professional bodies are pressed to give information, so have to adjust their responses accordingly.

Yes I admit the media will go to all lengths to gather news, the juicer the better, but that pressure on a professional public body such as the police, does not mean that they should furnish the media with such information at such early stage.
Haven't they ever heard of "playing their cards close to their chest"?

I am sure they have, but only slightly behind the need for instant news in the media's agenda, is a willingness to call out any authority for even thinking of delaying or dissembling information, so the police have to tread very carefully in any and all dealings with the media. Lord knows, their profile doesn't need any more media bashing!

It doesn't have to be a matter of delaying or dissembling information, but providing it at a more appropriate time, for example when they have had time to collect more evidence and investigate certain matters much more closely.

AOG - I see your point, but equally, delays cause distress for relatives and involved parties, so I suggest that information sooner rather than later is desirable.
Given the various issues and circumstances to be juggled in these situations, I don't think there is an easy or simple procedure to be adopted and followed.

I would not wish to suggest that the police would do either of these things - merely that the media would infer some sort of similar tactics if the delay was unexplained.
