In this case the security guards were only doing their job, why did this person need to make such a fuss.

Oh yes, and how many would? some can't even bother to wheel the shopping trolleys back where they are stored.

But it appears she managed to get a £10 voucher out of it along with press coverage, the only saving grace is that the security guards also happened to be black, else it could have been even more serious.

Yes, I think there will be quite a large number of people who take the basket away and then, rather than walk all the way back to return it, will either dump it in the car park (which stores can cope with) or will stick it in the boot and dispose of it at home (or give it to friends in the scrap metal trade).
I hope we don't end up having to put a £1 in for a basket as we do for a trolley.
Here's an opportunity for youth group etc to make some money- as well as or instead of helping with bag packing they could carry your basket to your car for a small donation and then return it to the store.
I'm perhaps not very good at customer service but I think that after a month or so, once everyone is familiar with the bag charges, if it was my store I'd probably not allow anyoneto take baskets out. If they need bags they should bring their own, buy one or buy less

I shop in a little Co-op in town......we can hire a trolley but the shop is small and I'm small and the trollies have a mind of their own....
There are free to use baskets which were fine....but limited the number of bottles of wine I could buy in one shop.....
So I was chuffed to bits when they brought in those biggish baskets on wheels.....perfect for a small person....in a small store.....shopping for one and I didn't flag with the weight of the wine bottles.....til three weeks ago....

There were none to be had.....why?.......every one has been stolen.....said the manager.......folk wheeled their shopping around the back to our car park.....didn't bring the wheelie basket back or leave in the car park....they took them home.....

I guess the baskets will now go too......and I'll be a danger with the trolley.....x

After using "bags for life" for several years now (Wales) I should warn you that even the braided straps can fray and break from repeated heavy loading and box corners or items sharper than boxes can poke holes in the sturdy plastic carriers, so "life" means 3-5 years, in practice.

England still seems to be at the teething troubles stage; plenty if learning curve still to go. I can't believe it has got someone fired already but petulance isn't a good trait for customer-facing staff.

I see people are selling their stolen baskets on e bay for around £25, the buyers obviously don't know you can buy them direct from the manufactures for around £6.

Rather than inconveniencing everyone with a deposit fee for baskets, maybe stores should allow you to take the basket away for a nominal deposit of £1, for which you also get a token, and then when you return the basket and token you get your £1 back.

Security tags will be fitted to the wire baskets as they are in some stores to prevent, or at least discourage carrying them to your car or indeed home. If she had a bag in the car why di she take it into the store?

I live close by a supermarket and have often had to telephone them as people used to leave shopping trolleys and baskets here and there in surrounding areas , even had them thrown in the lovely fishing lodge creating havoc for the anglers.

None of this is new - just needs to be a sensible and clear approach from all staff members and customers to reduce confusion.

As for taking such petty thhings to the media, well I guess some folk have too much time on their hands.

I can't believe how so many people seem traumatised by having to pay a tiddly little amount for a carrier bag. There was no upset when they started charging in Scotland.

I don't think I have ever seen anybody carry a shopping basket out of a store, to their car before !

I don't get something here. She was presumably planning on walking to the car with a basket, walking back to the store with the empty basket and then returning to the car again. It would have been quicker leaving the basket with the guard, walking the rest of the way to the car to get her bag, returning to the guards and then taking her stuff to the car.
That's why I think she was looking for a confrontation here

We have had this legislation in Wales for some time now, a little bother to start with, but no problem now. If I was living in England I would be considering a little enterprise selling good shopping bags and bottle carriers. They were like gold dust up here for a while initially. Market stall or car boot type set up. Smartish bags that can be used in any of the stores. The big chains will let you buy their branded bags, turning you into a walking advert for themselves.

I listened to a debate earlier this on LBC about the 5p charge in England.
I have never heard such a lot of uninformed nonsense !

There is a very simple solution to this issue, and us in Wales and Scotland have managed to get it right...why can't people in England ?


1...stop whinging !
2...buy a bag-for-life from your favourite Supermarket.
3...take it with you next time me you shop.
