When you look at the map where the most Liberal seats were gained they are from the poorer Provinces . They must think they have something to gain from 'spend spend spend' but I think they will be disappointed.

Just when the rest of the world are facing up to reality, they elect an eco-loon who intends to spend his way out of recession.
A stunning victory over the Conservative government of Stephen Harper, though. Who'd have thought it.
Yes, much better to cut, cut, cut until we have a broken society with a small elite at the top who live like lords!

Much better a one party state where everybody knows their place eh?

It's called democracy and weariness of being told how to live by the privileged.

Can't claim to be an expert on Canada, but I've read a few articles saying they escaped the worst of the world recession because they had a 'conservative' government in place that had already cut back on spending/borrowing.
Canada beat the World Financial Crisis largely because it had tighter regulation than the US and UK. Regulation was tightened in the 1980s, at precisely the time we were easing regulation. The Canadian banking system is also structured differently which makes it less prone to any shocks. None of the fortunate fnancial stability can be attributed the Harper's Conservatives.

Thatcher and Blair did not achieve 4 terms which is what Harper was chasing. The public tend to get fed up with politicians no matter how good they are. Politicians are by nature unable to reinvent themselves, so after a couple of terms their ideas seem old and uninspiring. The more of the same only works if the country is booming, which Canada isn't.
Canada is a huge country with greatly differing political views in certain Provinces. The farmers and oil billionaires in Alberta,Saskatchewan and Manitoba will be mortified with a Liberal Government, especially ones with French Canadian background yet the more Liberal Provinces such as B.C and Ontario will probably welcome the change. Depending where you live in Canada you experience hard core Conservatism along staunch Nationalism, or a welcoming Multi-Multiculturalism that embraces Liberal views. You can forget the eco-loon slander as Harper is just as passionate about that . Gromit is correct about the financial situation too - its all to do with how Banks operate not which Government is in at the time.

Like whom I wonder ;-))
"The public tend to get fed up with politicians no matter how good they are"

Gromit is perfectly correct. The electorate chooses a government which will spend all their money for them and then come back for more. They love the idea of ""public investment" Then they realise they're being fleeced and their hard-earned is being poured down the drain (the amount of time it takes for them to realise depends on the duplicity of the government). SO they elect a government that will tighten the public purse strings, let them keep more of their own money. Then they realistheir public services are being decimated so they elect a government that will spend all their money for them (return to Step 1)....

Canada escaped recession because its extremely hard for anyone to borrow any money, extremely hard to avoid paying taxes and they don't pay people vast amounts of money to sit on their backsides doing nothing. They only allow people into the country to work if the job has already been offered on the Canadian job scene and no one suitable has applied, and you can only come into the country if you have enough money to keep you and your family for at least 6 months and have a job or business to go to. Hopefully this won't change under the Liberals.
