Canada beat the World Financial Crisis largely because it had tighter regulation than the US and UK. Regulation was tightened in the 1980s, at precisely the time we were easing regulation. The Canadian banking system is also structured differently which makes it less prone to any shocks. None of the fortunate fnancial stability can be attributed the Harper's Conservatives.
Thatcher and Blair did not achieve 4 terms which is what Harper was chasing. The public tend to get fed up with politicians no matter how good they are. Politicians are by nature unable to reinvent themselves, so after a couple of terms their ideas seem old and uninspiring. The more of the same only works if the country is booming, which Canada isn't.
