"I have said I would listen and that's precisely what I intend to do," he said. "I believe we can achieve the same goal of reforming tax credits saving the money we need to save to secure our economy, while at the same time helping in the transition"

He promised "transitional help" for those affected after his party was defeated twice in the House of Lords.

But would he have listened this time yesterday ?

Obama has the same problems in the U.S Congress, as we do with the House of Lords. Bad day for the Tories.

//But would he have listened this time yesterday ? //

Before the debate and vote? What would he have listened to?
Question Author
Naomi ......To everybody in his own Party, as well as other groups that have made their views plain.

He and dave have made make an almighty cock-up here, and they are now paying the penalty.

dave promised not to cut tax credits before the Election, so he is now accused of lying, as well as bordering on incompetence.

Complete omni-shambles !
Mikey, the system needs to change and hopefully it will be changed. At least he is listening - unlike Red Ken who says //Labour MPs who make trouble for Jeremy Corbyn should expect to be de-selected//

His way or no way. That should worry you.

Maomi...off-topic ! But a good attempt at changing the subject !

As Sqad has said, a (very) bad day for the Tories !

Morning Sqad !
Morning mikey.
I do agree that the system should change especially when you see / read about the likes of that woman last week expecting her 12th child & the benefits she was getting, each Government has got it wrong but whey kick the people that do get off their rs & work, I said this earlier, why are they not kicking Amazon / Starbutts, are they afraid of them?
Not entirely, Mikey. I just added something I thought you might like to consider - but then again, perhaps not.
Unlike our 'lordships' congressmen are elected.

Its interesting Naomi, but still off topic. There seems to be a strange lack of support of here for the Tories, especially from people that confessed to voting for them a few weeks ago.
Mikey, what David Cameron said is debateable. There is a difference between Working Tax Credits and Child Tax Credits.

Well as 213/816 members of the Lords are ex labour MPs it's no surprise things will be tough to get through. Hypocritically 213 MPs that probably dissed the lords system when MPs but quite happy to don the robes when the time was right.
Prudie, how true!

Prudie...the Tories have 249 Peers and Labour has only 213 ! So if the Tories were defeated yesterday, perhaps they look for another reason why ?
Mikey I actually said things will be tough to get through - that means always and isn't surprising.
It apeers gordie got it wrong
leaping swiftly for hypotheticals there, Svejk - easier than accepting what's actually happened?

The Lords are doing exactly what they're there for. Cameron isn't planning to abolish them, he wants more of them.
Question Author
Prudie....There are already far too many Peers in the HOL....816. There isn't even room for them all to sit down, as was seen during the debate yesterday. So the answer isn't to pack even more into the Chamber.

The reality here is that Osborne has made an almighty procedural cock-up here, in the way that these measure were drawn up, and placed in the Lords, and its all their own fault.

Watching dave and Osborne trying to wriggle out of this mess today is going to be interesting, to say the least !
Svejk - //You're delighted with this break with democracy because it chimes with your own petty, juvenile, and quite frankly, ignorant political outlook.
If, when you voted for Labour Governments the HoL stymied every spend, spend, spend policy, you'd be the first one to spit your dummy out. And everyone on AB knows it. //

Disagree by all means - but let's dial down the vitriol shall we?
