I think offering job advice is condescending and derogatory to the person being helped. Food banks are an emergency measure and you have to be referred, you can't just hop on down there for free food, and you are only allowed a few visits before your are 'flagged up'. The last thing I would want is some do good-er giving me 'job advice' when I was already trying my hardest to find a job and already embarrassed I had to take help. Its akin to the Poor Law Boards in Victorian England

There was me thinking that the Scots had some pride as a nation. You are letting them down
I can agree that it is wrong to have food banks in this day and age
I can agree that 50% of children in poverty belong to working families.I can provide the link
For you to say that naomi's post was patronising and offensive displays arrogance and little pride in yourself.
If you work already you just get the food you need. If you are capable of work and have some pride you will jump at the chance for a job and manage without charity.
Where do you belong in the scheme of things? I can guess.

I would love to get a job but i have been trying for 5 years last week I had my first interview I didnt get it but it was good to get an interview. But there are foreign workers everywhere in this town. I applied for a job in a restuarant and no luck 3 weeks ago i was in 5/7 staff were Eastern European that is the reality. This country is overcrowded with immigrants getting jobs that should go to British I dont care if people think Im racist a lot of people think like this
They give benefit advice as well.
// Labour MP Frank Field said where the scheme had been operating in Birkenhead "90% of people did not return because the person sorted out their benefit problems". \\
The scheme seems to be successful according to the link. What's not to like? If I wanted a job I'd be very grateful that someone was on hand help me.

Not true. The first foodbank in this country opened in 2000 – when a Labour government was in office.

Yes, the truth is often seen by those who don’t want to acknowledge the facts as offensive. Nothing patronising about helping people who are capable of working to find work. You should be applauding such an initiative – not condemning it. Getting people into work will make foodbanks redundant – and that has to be a good thing, don’t you think?

Even though this comes from IDS, on the face of it, it doesn't sound too bad an idea. The Food Bank I support has lots of leaflets available for people to take away, and help to find jobs is one area that they assist in.
But some of the people we help already have jobs but are paid so low/work so few hours, they still need our help.

Yes, a well constructed, well composed answer, viv. It covered all the points raised and took the debate forward by a giant leap! :-)
My views on foodbanks are well known so I won't repeat them. However, as far as this proposal goes, why should anybody using a food bank be put off by the presence of a job advisor? If they want help it is there for them, if they don't all they need to do is politely decline. I don't know why it is that immediately anything is announced that will have an effect on the "poor" there are howls of protestone thing I would like to see is the costs and benefits of this scheme and an assurance that if it produces no worthwhile results t will) it binned.
