Other than a slight facial resemblance to Cleo Lane, I'd say he looks more white than black to me, so the racial part of the claim is hard for me to fathom.

How could the manager know "what the viewers are looking for"? It is not like we're polled for our preferences, is it?

As in any other job, people are put to the test - only in this instance, for obvious reasons, they are tested off air.

He felt the others were no better than him... His employers differed in that opinion.

Any TV channel has criteria for newsreaders. One assumes the first (or near the first) would be ability to read the news. Then looks. If it were down to ability only I would be the greatest news reader of all time. Unfortunately I don't have what it takes in the looks department ergo others that I consider no better at reading the news would get on more.
