"Knife before wife" was the motto and the family played second fiddle.
Medicine in the UK is a "Socialized profession" with strong Political and Union support and striking is a well used tool in the public sector.
I would have had nothing to do with strike action as a junior doctor.

Sqad....I think it is highly significant that such a huge number of Doctors voted for strike action, given what you say.
It shows what a complete dogs breakfast that Hunt and the Tories have made of this situation, to end up with such a result. As I have already said, Hunt should resign with immediate effect....perhaps James Naughtie was right after all.

balders // Were the terms and conditions not spelled out to them when they took on the job? //
yup - tduh - the govt are unilaterally changing ts and cs as Clarke did to the consultant fifteen years ago .... I thought there was case law on whether one side can change their side of the contract at will, and the other side are rigidly held to it but they seem not have gone down that road.
The main thing is that they want to move to contintental shifts ( working at week ends attracts no bonus ) and more unsupervised working at week ends in order to man the seven day working week.
I will never forget an admin asking
why cant this young doctor take out this four year olds appendix
Answer: because he is a psychiatrist
I was very careful of their Good Ideas after that one

AOG
no they are not lions led by donkeys ( that applied in 1976 to be honest)
they have their own leaders
and all seem to have done the 'communication' courses
leggy blondes all saying they dont want to kill sick little babies at weekends just to get Jeremy Hunt out of a spot
[rather than cookie monster look alikes ]
As soon as the Govt says - o we have a good idea !
"seven day working of the NHS and we will do it cost neutrally"
you know people are gonna to be asked to work for free ....

AOG...wouldn't it be better to have a look at the cause of this dispute and wonder why so many dedicated people have decided to strike, rather than involve the Daily Telegraph, the organ of the Tory Party ?
The Government in general and Hunt in particular are the cause here. dave should get a grip and sack Hunt asap, and appoint another Minister who can prove that he or she can manage the Health portfolio a little better.

and who might that be? In half a century of the NHS, it has been the "Killing Fields" of many an aspiring Politician both Labour and Tory.
The NHS in it's present form is dying.
PP...in 1975 I was a Consultant Surgeon and i din't vote for strike action as i had a wife and kids and couldn't afford to strike.

ahhh you were a donkey and not a lion ....
The BMA really screwed that one up ( but learnt from the experience )
and there was a break away organisation which allowed the govt to play one off the other and was formed as it was felt that the BMA whatever it did, did NOT represent juniors' interests
I remember Ellison Nash ( famous Barts surgeon ( telling my father
' o we dont need to worry about them - they'll soon go '
and indeed droves did - to America and Canada !

\\\\which allowed the govt to play one off the other and was formed as it was felt that the BMA whatever it did, did NOT represent juniors' interests \\\
From what i remember it was exactly OPPOSITE. The BMA always had the interest of the junior doctors and GPs, but couldn't care a toss about the Consultants, so, the consultants set up the breakaway group Independent Hospital and Consultants and Specialists Association (IHCSA)
Nobody had sympathy for the consultants....arrogant, rude, overpaid, God like......etc..etc BUT Barbara Castle gave them what they wanted...Private Practice in the NHS.
