I think things are about to escalate!
Turkey of course being a NATO member state, has now begun hostilities with Russia. Is this how it starts. Stocks worldwide have begun to fall sharply.
oops
I will keep my eye on the skies ....
Russians dont have a right to overfly Turkey in military aeroplanes without prior negotiation

I side with the Turks on this one - the I think the Russians were trying it again
Oh Boy, I bet Daesh/ISIS are loving this. What a coup for them!
Yes PP, as my friend just said quite rightly, give the Russians an inch and they take a mile.
It is all depends in whose airspace the jet was when it was attacked. The Russians have permission to fly in Syria, and the jet crashed in Syria. If it strayed into Turkish airspace, they have a right to shoot it down. It should be relatively easy to determine where it was, military aircraft have very accurate global positioning systems.

Turkey must apologise to Russia immediately.
The US and NATO should keep out of the spat. The US and Turkey are not enjoying good relations at the moment.

It appears that the Russian plane was not in Turkish airspace (we will have to wait and see) It could be Turkey attempting to drag NATO into the mess.
This from 6th October, about a previous incursion of Turkish airspace:

// Turkey's prime minister says Russia has described its warplane's violation of Turkey's airspace as a "mistake" while calling the country's entry into the conflict in Syria as an escalation.

Ahmet Davutoglu, speaking in a live interview on HaberTurk TV on Monday, said that Turkey's rules of engagement were clear, whomever violates its airspace.

A Russian aircraft entered Turkish airspace near the Syrian border on Saturday, prompting Turkey to scramble two F-16 jets to intercept it and summon Russia's ambassador in protest.

"The Turkish armed forces are clearly instructed. Even it is a flying bird it will be intercepted," Davutoglu said.
He warned Turkey's enemies and allies not to infringe its air space but he dismissed the notion of tensions with Russia.

"The Syrian issue is not a Turkey-Russia crisis," he said.

"Our channels with Russia remain open," he said hoping that Moscow would give up on "wrong attitudes". //
-Talbot,
The Russian Plance crashed in Syria, but that does not prove it wasn't in Turkish airspace when it was hit.
Russians 'bombing IS' again? In that area?
They need some new maps
They say that the plane was shot down from the ground

Too early to say what happened yet but Russian planes have previous when it comes to violating airspace.
sky is currently carrying radar tracks

there is a finger of Turkey that goes into Syria which they call a salient and yup tracks all over it

hasnt some other ABer onserved the russians need maps ?
Sorry

Sky News that is
It's obviously the same map company that did them their maps of eastern Ukraine :-)
Yes Peter you could be flying repeatedly over a small maybe narrow bit of forbidden airspace and warned repeatedly to get the hell. Then the eleventh time it wouldn't really matter if the actual shooting too place outside. I think you'd rightly be deemed to be taking the *** and ... Boom!

Anyway, we don't really know
// The Russian Defence ministry stressed that "throughout its flight, the aircraft remained exclusively above Syrian territory", adding: "Objective monitoring data shows it." //

// Turkish military said two F-16s on patrol had fired on an unidentified aircraft at 09:24 (07:24 GMT) after warning it 10 times over five minutes about violating Turkish airspace over the town of Yayladagi, in Hatay province.
It noted that the F-16s had intervened "in accordance with the rules of engagement", which were changed after Syria shot down a Turkish plane in 2012. //

It will be crucial to determine the exact position when the Russia jet was hit. Turkey frequently violates Syian airspace, so the Russians who are there at the invitation of Assad could in future 'secure' Syrian airspace from those it deems its enemy.
It is now being suggested that the warplane was shot down with a ground to air missile fired by 'rebels' from within Syria.
