Rather than phasing the cuts in, as he had been expected to do, Mr Osborne said he said he had decided the "simplest thing" was "to avoid them altogether", even though it would mean missing his own target for overall welfare spending in the early years of this Parliament"

He had no choice. I find this whole thing rather alarming. Is Osborne so mired in his ideology that he couldn't even see that apart from anything else this measure was actually a disincentive to work? Credit to the decent Tory MPs who would not be bribed and cajoled and stood firm for what was right.

I'm no fan of Osborne as Chancellor -- he has consistently failed to meet his own targets, for one thing -- but the entire Labour line of attack at the moment seems chaotic and incoherent. I can't say I wanted Corbyn to win, but I had hopes that once he did he might at least be able to do a decent job. But if he can do so he's taking his sweet time getting to look like a decent opposition leader. Ho hum.
