It's important to remember that Time's person of the year isn't meant as an accolade or an endorsement. It's intended as a mark of people who have made the biggest splash that year and have defined events sharply. That's why the historic list involves Hitler and Stalin alongside Churchill.

it's not a moral judgment, as ZM points out. This comes up every few years when the magazine selects someone who's made the sort of news people disapprove of. It gives everyone a chance to vent.
