Should a man who openly supported the political wing of the IRA be taken seriously when he talks of combatting terrorism, or is it simply that the world has 'good terrorists' and 'bad terrorists'?

Probably most of the Kennedy clan supported Noraid as well but they still seem to be held high in esteem even though they have lead a less than squaeky clean lifestyle. Big votes to be gained fron the Irish/Americans.
Don't hear much from the Guardian regarding Jeremy Corbyn and shadow chancellor John McDonnell association with the Irish terror group.

"Peace in our time" - f-off Messrs Tom & Jerry......Donald's behind you.
History shows that America has long had a misty-eyed romanticised view of the 'freedom fighters' of Northern Ireland - and big money was raised in support of Noraid.

I think, since everything Mr Trump says appears to be conjured from a mind that is set on upsetting the maximum number of people for the minimum political gain, he should simply be ignored.

Mr Trump will see no irony whatever in supporting the IRA at the height of its terror campaign, with tarring every Muslim with the same brush - in order to understand irony, you need a sense of humour.

Although, considering his hair ...
Didn't our very own Red Ken entertain Sinn Fein at London's County Hall a few years back?

//Mr Livingstone's lowest point was his involvement with Sinn Fein at a time when the IRA had inflicted horrendous casualties with its London bombing campaign. One allegation is that he gave £53,000 of the GLC's money to the Troops Out Movement, the campaign to rid Ireland of all British troops - but Mr Livingstone said the monmey went to the National Council for Civil Liberties to investigate the harassment of Irish-born Londoners under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. //

You don't have to look across the ditch to find Sinn Fein supporters.
Seems like a pre requisite to represent Labour here in the UK.

"Minimum political gain" ???? He hasn't done too bad so far

Tut, Tut personal rudeness again.
Oh dear sp1814, not quite going the way that you wanted.

What - do you mean people from both sides of the political divide exchanging views, rather than making personal digs?

That's exactly what I wanted.

Anyway - back to the subject at hand...does anyone think that Trump might be able to brush this off with a "That was another time..." statement?

I don't think (with the current debate he's initiated) he has much wriggle room.
Nelson Mandela was a terrorist, but died a world wide hero.
>>>"Minimum political gain" ???? He hasn't done too bad so far

Has he done that well?

The American political system is all about how much money you have to pay for your campaign (it can cost hundreds of millions of dollars).

Trump has loads of money so he can fund his campaign.

However there is a big difference to coming out with a load of stupid comments, and being elected president.
of course you have good and bad terrorists

The CIA supported ISIL at one point didnt they and arm them ( good terrorists ) but then they started misbahving ( not shooting in the right direction ) and the good terrorists became bad terrorists....

simples
If you have money in the USA you can wriggle all you like. The Kennedy's managed enought times. Was it Chesapeake Bridge ?
I'm no scholar of Irish history but, if the political wing of the IRA hadn't been included in talks there would be no 'peace' in Nor Niron.
This would appear to make the oddly coiffed one a master of diplomacy and negotialtion.
As I type this I can feel myself slipping from reality into a scary place.
Chapaquidick (sp)
Chappaquiddick bridge I think
David Ben-Gurion, Jomo Kenyatta, Archbishop Makarios and Mahatma Gandhi are just four former leaders of their countries once declared terrorists by the then British governments - and these are the ones that spring to mnd without doing any research.
Menachem Begin (Irgun) also a terrorist

Mr Trump's campaign will not succeed in gaining him the Republican nomination - the Right Wing of America may have some seriously dubious ideas, but they are not stupid. He was, and remains unelectable.

"Tut tut"??? have we woken up in 1957??

I can see that my attempts at a little mild humour completely fail to reach you AOG.

So let's just take it as read that I am not being serious, Mr Trump is unlikely to read my comment, much less be upset by it.

And in future, let's also take it as read that I am exercising my sense of humour, of which you don't approve, so that will save you the tedious task of tutting at me, and me the tedious task of confirming that I am not at all bothered if you don't like my light-hearted observations.

cactus; //David Ben-Gurion, Jomo Kenyatta, Archbishop Makarios and Mahatma Gandhi//

The first 3 actually were terrorists, but Gandhi advocated non-violence.
