It is a fact that black faces are hard to see in the dark, why else would troops black up their faces etc. when they wish to camouflage themselves?

/// Football legend Paul Gascoigne is at the centre of a 'hate crime' investigation by police after allegedly telling a 'racist joke' while on stage. ///
/// A spokesperson for West Midlands Police confirmed they received a report of a hate crime during the performance. ///
/// 'Officers have taken an official statement from the victim and the inquiry is ongoing. Police take reports of hate crime extremely seriously and a thorough investigation will take place.' ///
'Hate Crime', 'Racist Joke' a thorough investigation will take place. He could be sent down for years could he not?
/// Community activist Desmond Jaddoo, a leading West Midlands campaigner for Afro-Caribbean rights, has welcomed police involvement. ///
Now there is a surprise, they are generally moaning about any form of police involvement

/// The light was so poor he could not see the man's face yet he knew he was a security guard? ///
Could it be that the newspaper reported that he happened to be a security guard, or perhaps he knew the guy previously and also knew that he would be standing in the wings, or even he could see the bright buttons on his tunic who really knows except those who were there?
/// The incident soured Gascoigne's triumphant Black Country tour, ///
No, not even going to go there. :0)

/// "Now there is a surprise, they are generally moaning about any form of police involvement" whereas with ANOTHEOLDGIT he moans about any form of Islamic involvement. ///
Now what a ridiculous analogy to make, the police are there to protect us and make sure that the law is implemented, whereas Islam????????????

But is this a hate crime?
No. Just a 1970s joke that's woken up after a 40 year slumber and not realised that people don't make jokes bases solely on skin tone.
Same with the mother-in-law joke, and Englishman, Irishman, Scotman joke.
Perhaps we should remember that Mr Gascoigne has spent many years in the grip of alcoholism and therefore shouldn't be expected to be sharp and witty whilst on stage.
He's no professional stand up.
