Tilly, there are two ways, one of which involves entirely innocent people.
People who know each other (or it can be arranged by a third person) deliberately crash in to each other and claim thousands for whiplash. Often people who weren't in the cars will claim they were passengers and cash in.
Or they suddenly brake in the hope that an unsuspecting driver will crash in to the back of them. More compensation claims.

i was a victim of one of these scams. The vehicle in front of me had no lights or signals on the back, and just as the stream of traffic started to speed up after leaving the speed limit area, they jammed on the brakes. I was increasing my speed, I saw no brake lights or signals ( there was no turning or junction at that spot) and my car hit their ancient wreck. my car was written off. I was quite badly injured, spent time in hospital and missed three weeks work. The police tried very hard to blame me, but gave up eventually. I fully expected to hear that the wreckers had made some claim against my insurance, but they didn't. Maybe they were slightly ashamed of having hurt me so badly.

As many of these claims are for whiplash only (because it is impossible to prove/disprove so the insurance companies more or less cough up) it is high time whiplash became an acceptable risk of driving that couldn't be compensated for. I know some people are badly affected by whiplash over a long period but they are very much in the minority.

I believe these sorts of people should go behind the bars for long period of time. I agree with you that it is a huge and very lucrative business. I receive at least two to three calls (on average) every day where they try to not only tell me but convince me that I have had an accident. When I tell them that no, I never had an accident then the next question and a good news (according to them) is that even if I haven’t had an accident then they could still get me 5K to 6K if my car has any dent. When I say that no, I would not like this sort of money, they give me impression that I am stupid. Amazing, and so difficult to get rid of these people are.
