According to a local newspaper, this *** (sorry) happened on Münsterstrasse, which is a fairly long road, which - the satellite picture shows - has a mix of houses and woodland along it. So, not exactly a remote location.

Vending machines (for lots of different things) are widely found across Germany. (In Mainz they seem to be on every street, even in residential areas away from any shops).

Brits are often surprised to see cigarette vending machines almost everywhere:
