If there is anyone who needs to be monitored for public safety, the police will be aware of who, and where such people are.
What no-one needs is a vigilante mentality getting a hold on people - it doesn't help, and people get hurt.
dave m - there were paedophiles around when you were growing up. Your parents didn't know who they were. They never bothered you. Your parents presumably looked after you and cared about you, but didn't smother you in cotton wool. The same approach with your children will be equally ok.
andy hughes makes a very good point. I'm sure we all remember the paediatricians who were terrorised when some information leaked once. Vigilantes are sadly also often not the sharpest tools in the box. You might be a calm man, dave m, but others are not. Some men may do their children more harm with this list in their hand, as they do something 'stupid' and end up in prison. Then they are not around to protect or raise their children properly. Some men would fall into this trap.
PS - I do hope you're teaching your children good grammar/typing! :-p
Imagine that, sexoffenders.co.uk, being able to search whithin x miles of a postcode. Sorry for any offence, I do not mean to make a joke of this very serious subject but I am trying to illustrate the impact of having this type of information in the public domain. The previous posters are right, the sex offenders will probably end up getting killed by organised groups or just anyone walking back from the pub with 9 pints inside them.
Although this is certainly not always the case, we the public have to assume that the sex offenders have been let back into the community as they are no longer an imminent threat to anybody and that the police are monitoring their behavoiur. Without this approach there will be no chance of any sex offender ever being rehabilidated as some of them surely are.
Wish my poor mum and dad had known the perv who they were entrusting with their daughter and inviting into their home most nights had known. He violated me but at 10 me and my pal didnt have a clue so it went on for a year until an innocent childs remark sparked the adults into action.Luckily I didnt begin to realise until I matured so it hasnt had a profound effect on my life but my mum and dad have to this day over 30yrs later never mentioned it to me.He got the jail.
Yes there should be an awareness.I now have a perv living adjacent to a local school & next to me who tried to entice my 14yr old out her room from our garden. He then put her through the ordeal of an hour in the witness box and was found guilty. He got probation only because we were vigilant because of his past - 4yrs in jail (for obv far worse).I now have to put up with this guy living next to me.He even had the audicity to come my door because my daughter passed him and called him a perv in the street.Diddums.Lucky we are not vigilantes.
Jan-Bug - If you read my response then that might go someway to your response to dave.
I was once with friends at a little cheese and wine soiree before we hit the town and the wine obv loosened the tonque.4 out of 5 had been abused.3 by relatives. This has been swept under the carpet for too long. This was the first they had opened up and not that it matters at all but we are talking professional people here - not sensationalists.I dont know the rights or wrongs.I personally got in touch with a Family Liaison officer with Police who initially visited the person involved and had a few long talks with him.He the re-assured me annd then 2 yrs later he tries to lure my daughter.A leopard never changes their spots specially with a drink on them.
Dom Tuk
1 - I replied to dave before you posted.
2 - I'm sorry for what happened to you, but it was not my fault, so I don't like you trying to make me feel guilty about it. It should never have happened, I'm not pleased about it, nor have I ever said anything to you about it that was critical or in anyway unsympathetic.
3 - I absolutely stand by what I said. Today's society cannot be trusted with that sort of information. I believe that innocent people would be injured or killed. Just look at how the Animal Rights Militia have behaved over the last few days. A Children's Rights Militia would be even worse - terrifying to the max I would predict.
Jan-Bug - You Ok?
You obv havent been a victim and god forbid one of yours becomes one - if you have family.
Your perception totally changes.
No male members of my family (Iwas advised by the Police) were allowed to know what he did to my daughter for fear of reprisals. As it happens they wouldnt have and havent since but I couldnt take a chance.
A final addendum from me - only because I and my daughter have first hand experience-the night he targeted my daughter was the night they found one of the little Soham girls. My daughter has the same name as one of them!Take what you like.
Obviously I realise my post should have been addressed to you Buddy, not Dom Tuk - I only just noticed my mistake and I didn't mean to cause any confusion. Sorry.
I'm 22, I don't have children of my own, and thank you for not wishing my future offspring any harm.
Again, I'm sorry for what happened to your daughter, and to anyone else who is reading this, and/or their relatives. My friends recently had a baby, and if anyone did anything to her, I know I would be very angry and I'm not sure I'd trust myself with to remain calm if I knew who the offender was.
Now, I 'm a calm person and never violent. But, by the same token, if someone hurt my friends' baby, I don't know how calm I'd be. So if similar information was put in the hands of men and women who do have a tendency to be aggressive, I think that the risk of violence would be very high.
I stand by what I said. If a child gets abused by, e.g., their football coach, it will not help them to recover if their father then goes away to prison for ABH/GBH or worst of all, murder. Nor should eye-for-and-eye attacks go unpunished. Motive, however genuine, should never be an excuse for planned violence.
I honestly don't see that if a child I knew/know was the victim of abuse, I would suddenly support vigilante behaviour on a widespread scale across the whole country. www.sexoffenders.org.uk would only encourage appalling and dangerous behaviour, and I am vey glad that such a site will never exist legally or officially.
Jan-Bug.
What I meant was that it was a truly bizarre coincedence that he, after living beside us for 2 yrs chose the night both girls (not one as I previously said) were found and identified. One had the same name as my daughter. The police were very concerned as was the Judge - as it almost acted as a trigger to him - and plus he had a drink on him which obv lowered any defence he has managed to maintain since being released.
It doesnt take a lot for these people to be triggered off by what we would deem an inconsequential.Hope this clarifies what I previously posted.
Jan-Bug
If you read my answers I deliberately stated that we were vigilant and not vigilantes.I-however hard it was-adhered to the law as did my parents and later on her father uncles etc.
I think you have my responses mixed up with someone elses - unless its one of those answers which tags onto someone elses and wasnt meant for me.If thats the case sorry.
I do feel however that people should be made aware because even the police werent aware of his past because the sex offenders register was only introduced 4 months after he was released.I agree its a grey area however because you are always going to get people who jump on the vigilante bandwagon which in effect spoils the knowledge and security it would give to law abiding people, which would allow them to be that little bit more careful with their own children.
