Could this be yet another scam, so that their parents can later enter Britain under a 'right of a family life' appeal?

Yes baz. I was really directing my question to the people who believe that somehow (a) we have a responsibility towards these people and (b) that we have the facilities and resources to accommodate them.
This country is borrowing vast sums of money annually to provide sustainence, facilities and services for those already here (not to mention vast sums to support those not here). Many of those services are creaking at the seams and the people who have paid in for their provision are finding it difficult to access them. Short of borrowing even more money to shore them up, they will continue to struggle. Quite how anybody can suggest that we should take in "only 3,000" more souls, especially unaccompanied children (whose support will carry enormous costs in terms of both cash and facilities) is quite beyond me. It's almost as if they believe the cash involved grows on trees (which perhaps many of them do).

and you can bet your last euro that the bleeding heart liberals from the uk that are out there helping will be advising them of all the ways to stay here once they get here, women (the few that there are) to get pregnant asap, the men to hook up with brit women, have kids get a cat, then claim thier 'ooman right to a family life and on it goes...
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
Your quote is not quite appropriate to the situation, maggie, but let's not quibble. There are plenty of "good men" in the countries that these people have passed through as they made their way westwards. It seems either many of them have seen fit to let the "evil" you mention prevail (though I'm not too sure what that evil is) or the lost souls have chosen not to take advantage of their munificence.

Just to restore a little decorum:
“Don't see the point of it…”
The original reason for the development of Cockney Rhyming Slang was undoubtedly to confuse non-locals. Various theories have been put forward to suggest why it was developed but the most common seems to be that it was devised by market traders to allow them to fix prices amongst themselves without being accused of collusion. Among other suggestions is that it was first used as a code among thieves and pickpockets. It somewhat loses its purpose when written down but it nonetheless lightens the mood (except when others get frustrated by it).
“What on earth are "saucepans" and "bathbuns" in relation to this post?”
Saucepans = Saucepan lids = kids = children
Bathbun = Son
